brief biography

From Re: William Fitzhugh ov Virginia 1650 February 09, 2001

It is speculated that Rose was Rosamund Sturman, but I don't believe anyone has actually come up with proof for that. John Tucker died May 1671 in Westmoreland County, leaving the following will:

Dated 5 May 1671, proved 31 May 1671. To my two daughters, Sarah and Rose Tucker, when they are 17 years old; to the child my wife now goes with; my eldest son; my wife Rose to be exx.

There is a small area of Westmoreland County named Tucker Hill after John Tucker. Rose had 4 children by John Tucker: John, Sarah, Rose (who married Ebenezer Blackistone), and Gerrard. As you can tell by John Tucker's will, Gerrard was not yet born when he died. Rose remarried to Dr. Thomas Gerrard, a close family friend, soon after John's death (that is who Gerrard is named after - she was probably still pregnant with Gerrard when they married). Dr. Thomas Gerrard died around Sept 1673, leaving the following will:

Made 1 Feb 1672, probated 19 Sep 1673. To be buried by deceased wife Susanna; son John and loving and deare wife Rose, estate in Virginia, Maryland, and England. Daughter Mary, land in Mrs. White's Neck; to son-in-law, Blaxtones, adaj: Mr. Cole, Mr. Salles. Son Justinian. Grandson Gerrard Peyton. One mare to Gerrard Tucker; my sons-in-law and daughters-in-law; my 3 sons and 2 daughters; my eldest son Justinian my land in England. Witness: John Waugh, Isaac Allerton, J. Lee, John Cooper.

Rose then married Capt. John Newton, often called "Marriner". They had a son, Thomas Newton. John Newton died around July 1697, leaving the following will:

Dated 19 Aug 1695, proved 28 July 1697. To eldest son John my lands at Carlton and Camilsforth, in Yorkshire in England, and the house in Hull, which was my father's, also the land bought of Joseph Laycock; to said son John and his four children I leave 1,000 pounds of tobacco each; to son Joseph and his three sons 1,000 pounds of tobacco each; to son Benjamin and his daughter 1,000 pounds of tobacco each; son Gerrard and wife Rebecca live at ye Little Falls and have 1,000 acres in the freshes of Rappahannock with a mill and four negroes; to daughter Elizabeth Newton one-half of a tract of 2,150 acres and one negro; to my wife all my plate for life and then to my daughter; to son Thomas 350 acres and a mill at Totoskey; to wife Rose Newton 5,000 pounds of tobacco each year for life and various other bequests; to son Thomas four negroes; to grandson John the son of Joseph Newton, 200 acres of land. My three English sons one negro if they are living at my death.

Rose died around Feb 1712, leaving the following will:

Made 1 Dec 1711; probated 4 Feb 1712. To son Thomas Newton, land in Virginia and Maryland my late husband Thomas Gerrard left me.

notes

Ann Sturman, Wife of Thomas: Records of Westmoreland Co., Virginia. Deeds, Wills &c. from 1653 to 1659 p. 20. Will of Ann Sturman proved 21 th Aug. 1654.

"I give to my daughter Rosamund wch lives in England & that Tobco is left in my sone Richards hands to pay her & what Tobco may be over & above according as I have disposed of I leave to my sone Richard"

The will of John Tucker was proved in Westmoreland May 31,1671. His legatees were his daughters Sarah and Rose Tucker (who married, subsequently, Mr. Blackistone, of Maryland), 5,000 pounds of tobacco each; and unborn child, 5,000 pounds tobacco; eldest son (whom he does not name) and wife Rose. Appoints Captain (Thomas) Phillpot and Mr. Richard Kenner, of Westmoreland, overseers. Mrs. Rose Tucker married (II) Thomas Gerrard, of Westmoreland (formerly of Maryland, she was his second wife); and he, on January 28th, 1672, made a deed of gift to the children of Mr. John Tucker, deceased, and of "my now wife, Mrs. Rose Gerrard," vizt; John, Gerrard, Sarah and Rose Tucker. On April 24th, 1674, Mrs. Rose Gerrard, widow, made a deed in consideration of a marriage contracted between her eldest daughter, Rose, and William Fitzhugh. Mrs. Gerrard married (III) John Newton, of Westmoreland prior to May 16th, 1677. (Virginia Historical Magazine)

The will of Rose Newton, widow, was proved in Westmoreland, January 28th, 1712. She gave her son Thomas Newton her lands in Virginia and Maryland and all rents and arrearages for lands left her by her former husband Thomas Gerrard, &c, &c. Thus it appears that Thomas was omitted in his father's will, and the only child named in his mother's. (VA Historical Mag)

"Re: Rose's maiden name----footnote from _The FitzHugh Family of King George Co., VA_ by Elizabeth N. Lee: Norma Tucker, _Virginia Colonials and Their Maryland Relatives_, (Baltimore, 1994), p. 35. The maiden name Sturman is not positively proved but Norma Tucker gives evidence that leads one to believe that this is most likely correct."

From http://genforum.genealogy.com/tucker/messages/5490.html

"Unfortunately, the information posted on the Allerton forum about John Tucker and Rose Allerton is incorrect. John Tucker and Isaac Allerton Jr. (1628-1702) were contemporaries and John Tucker died (1671) before any of Isaac Allerton's children had married. John Tucker's (c1630-1671) wife was Rose Sturman (aft1635-1712) who later married Dr. Thomas Gerrard and John Newton Sr. John Newton Jr., who became Rose's step-son in 1676, married an Allerton and this appears to be the source of the Tucker/Allerton error which has been widely disseminated".

[F7816]. Morris (Maurice) TUCKER. [W2-3].

Born 4 February 1642 in (Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts-S7)(in England-S2).

Said to be born at Kent, Gravesend, England; the son of John Tucker and Rose Struman, but there is no proof that this is correct.

Research by the Tucker Society suggests that he was from near Bournemouth on the Dorset coast.

John Ford II, died 1714, only proven son of John and Patience Ford, married Elizabeth Newton, daughter of Edward Newton, probable son of John Newton, Jr., as he was in the right location and records of the Newton family show a son unnamed. John Newton, Jr., was step-son of Rose Tucker Gerard Newton.

This seems disproven:
