About Salamon (Simon) Lob Lipot Riesz Ries

Birthdate based on "Lipot Riesz, age 49, from Kopcseny" in Hungarian census 1848 (via JewishGen.org), living in Gyonk (see below). Simon Löbl Riesz also appears in Kopcseny (later Kittsee) census in 1830 and 1835. The family list in 1848 overlaps the known family (on GENI) by at least half the children's names, though ages do not always align. Kittsee, now in Austria (Burgenland) lies 32 km northeast of Neusiedl am See, on the Slovak border opposite Bratislava (Preßburg).

Death date extrapolated from birthdate of Löbl Riesz's grandson Simon Leopold Riesz, b. 1855 to son Heinrich Riesz.

That Simon Leb Riesz was a Rabbi is evident on his daughter Rosalie Riesz Stricker's marriage record, and is also indicated in DIE FAMILIE WOLF by Ernst Wolf 1924 (http://www.fpe.ch/stammbaum/dfw.htm#AV_Riesz) (see p. 98a) which states in the alphabetical list of names (under "Nathan Riesz"):

  • Riesz Nathan (98a) geb. 19.VIII.1864, Wien.
  • V.: Heinrich Riesz, Gyönk, Lederhändler, Preßburg, dann Wien (1822-1867); M.: Johanna Mauthner, Kittsee b. Preßburg
  • Gr. V. m.: Moses Mauthner, Kittsee & Gr. M. m.: Karoline Figdor
  • Gr. V. v.: Simon Leb Riesz, Rabbiner Gyönk; Gr. M. v.: Leonore Mauthner, Schwester des Moses Mauthner.

Gyönk is a city in Tolna, an administrative county (comitatus or megye) in present-day Hungary as well as in the former Kingdom of Hungary. It lies in central Hungary, on the west bank of the river Danube. In the early 1700s Hungarian and German families arrived in the village. The school was founded in 1806. In 1882, the Budapest-Pécs-Dombóvár-rail line, which passes through the Kapos Valley, connected the village. (Wikipedia)
