  • Birth: Jul. 16, 1857 - Wayne County, Iowa, USA
  • Death: Feb. 22, 1927 - Delphos, Ringgold County, Iowa, USA

Samuel Winfield Lane was born July 26, 1857, in Wayne county Iowa, near Freedom and departed this life February 22, 1927, at his home in Delphos at the age of 69 years, six months and 26 days. He was the second son of James A. and Sarah A. Lane. He grew to manhood in the vicinity in which he was born. On September 1, 1880, he was united in marriage to Martha J. Barker. To this union were born five children, two sons, Ruben and Fred of Clearfield, Iowa, and three daughters, Ola and Sylvia at home in Delphos, and Mrs. Clem Ruby, of Clearfield, who were all with him in his last illness, except Mrs. Ruby, who has been confined to her home since last August.

He with his wife and family moved to Delphos in the year 1894 and has been a resident of Delphos ever since with the exception of one year, they lived on a farm near Delphos. When he was twenty-three years of age he united with the Baptist church and later changed his membership to the Church of Christ of which he was a member at the time of this death. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Benton, Iowa. Mr. Lane was a man who always encouraged any enterprise which was for the upbuilding of the community in every way and was always willing to do his share. He was of a quiet and sober nature and possessed the qualities which made for him many friends, especially among the children.

His last illness was of short duration, only lasting three days. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two sons and three daughters, five brothers and four sisters, H. C. and J. A. Lane, and Mrs. Mary Ryan all of Chariton, Iowa; Nellie Ryan and Wm. Lane, of Hiteman, Iowa; one sister of Eddyville, Iowa, one brother, Louis Lane, of Lemon, Mo., and Marion Lane, of Ottumwa, one sister, Mrs. Etta Rurak, of Olwein; also four grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at Christian church at Delphos, Wednesday, February 23, 1927, conducted by Rev. Wayne Greene, of Des Moines, a former pastor. Interment in Clearfield cemetery.
