His brother Benjamin Moore was the great grandfather of Clement Clarke Moore who wrote "A Visit from St. Nicholas", more commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas" and " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas" from its first line. The poem, "arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American", was first published anonymously in the Troy, New York, Sentinel on December 23, 1823, and was reprinted frequently thereafter with no name attached and later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who acknowledged authorship in 1837.
