About Sarah Magruder

Not a known child of Colonel Ninian Beall

Sarah

  • Birth: between 1666 - 1670, Calvert County, Maryland, USA
  • Death: May 9, 1734 Prince George's County, Maryland, USA

the theory that I believe is likely correct is one proposed by Peter McManus, that they are MILLS (not BEALLs), the daughters of William MILLS and wife Tabitha.

As to the wives of Samuel Magruder and John Pottenger: it is true that Sarah Bell and Mary Bell were transported to Maryland, though it seems unlikely that they were sisters since Mary came in 1660 and Sarah not till 1675. While it is possible that they were relatives of Col. Ninean Beall, the notion that they were his nieces is pure guesswork. Mary Bells/Bealls came to Maryland in Ninean's wake, and the relationships are mostly unknown. The idea that Samuel Magruder's wife Sarah was nee Beall probably originated with Samuel's having named a son Ninean Magruder, but that falls far short of proof. (Ninean is a not-uncommon Scots saint's name; Col. Ninean Beall was the most prominent Scots settler in Maryland and a close neighbor, and presumably friend, of the Magruders.) The idea that John Pottenger's wife Mary was nee Beall depends wholly on the assumption that Samuel Magruder married Sarah Beall, the known fact that Samuel Magruder and John Pottenger were brothers-in-law, and the speculation that Sarah and Mary Beall were sisters.

Disproved

Sarah Beall was born abt 1659 in Prince Georges County, Maryland, United States. She was [NOT] the daughter of Colonel Ninean Beall (1625-1717) and Ruth (Moore) Beall (1638-1712).

Sarah [DID NOT] married Francis Watts, of Anne Arundel in 1678 in Prince Georges County, MD. Francis is [NOT] the son of Edward Watts (1620-1690) and Anne (Sherman) Watts (1620-1665). This couple had 5 children: Sarah, Eliza, Susan, Francis and John. Francis Watts died in Anne Arundel County, MD in 1684 or 1985. His will was dated Dec. 2, 1684 and the estate was inventoried on March 2, 1685 and the land his 2 sons inherited was conv. to them on Oct. 31, 1685. This was the 100 acres called "Bachelor's Delight" on the Wye River. For more information: Colonial Families of Anne Arundel County, Maryland by Robert Barnes on pages 251-254.

Sarah married Col. Samuel M. Magruder in 1686 in Prince Georges County, MD. Col. Samuel Magruder was a High Justice, Captain of Militia, Member of the House of Burgesses for Maryland, etc. You can find out more about this family from the book "Colonial Families of the United States" page 349. Sarah brought 5 young children into this marriage, then she and Col. Samuel Magruder had the following 9 children: Samuel, Ninian, James, William, Alexander, Verlinda, Mary, Elinor and Nathaniel Magruder. Col. Samuel M. Magruder died on April 16, 1711 in Prince Georges County, MD.

Sarah died on 9 May 1734 in Prince Georges, MD, USA. She was abt 76 years old.

This is the Sarah Beall who was Col. Ninian Beall's sister, not his daughter. There is no record of her ever leaving Scotland.
