Shadrach WILBUR (Samuel, Nicholas, Nicholas, Thomas), was born 6 SEP 1631 in Sible Hedingham, ESSEX, ENGLAND. At the age of <1, Shadrach was baptized in Sible Hedingham, Essex, England, on 6 Sep 1631. Shadrach died in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, in Feb 1697/1698; he was 65.

About 1658 when Shadrach was 26 and she was 22, he married Mary DEANE (Walter5, William4, Walter3, Richard(?)2, John1)., daughter of Walter DEANE & Eleanor Strong/COGAN, in MA. Born about 1638 in probably Taunton, Bristol Co., MA. Mary died in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, on 27 Mar 1691/1692; she was 53. They had the following ten children:

  1. Mary (Died Young). Born on 11 Nov 1659 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA. Mary died in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, on 19 Jun 1674; she was 14.
  2. Sarah (1661-<1745)
  3. Samuel (1663-1695)
  4. Rebecca (1664-1727)
  5. Hannah. Born on 24 Feb 1667/1668 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA.

  9. Elizier. Born on 1 Jul 1677 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA. Elizier died in 1700; he was 22.
  10. Benjamin. Born on 23 Jul 1683 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA. Benjamin died in 1750; he was 66. On 11 Apr 1716 when Benjamin was 32, he married Jane BIRD.

On 13 Sep 1692 when Shadrach was 61, he second married Hannah BASS, daughter of Deacon Samuel BASS, and Anne Saville, She was the widow of Stephen Payne/Paine who died in July, 1691. Born about 1633/1634. Hannah died aft Apr 1710; she was 77.
With her first husband Stephen Payne/Paine, she had ten children.

Shadrach died in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, in Feb 1697/1698; he was 65.

Shadrach Wilbor was evidently a man of wealth and influence in his time. He held several important trusts, represented his town in the Provincial Government, and served as town- clerk thirty-five successive years.

Baylis says (vol. iv. 8I), “By reason of a fire, we are deprived of the account of his long official services.” For lifting his voice, however, in opposition to the evils, as he deemed them, in the government of Sir Edmund Andros, he was apprehended, and imprisoned in Boston, Aug. 30, 1687 (Mass. Hist. Coll., vol. vii. p. 190). As he is referred to soon after as being in Taunton, it is not probable he was long retained in prison.

His will was dated Sept. 12, 1696, and probated the following March (see Bristol-County Probate Records, vol. i. pp. 213, 214), in which he bequeaths to Hannah, his wife, thirty pounds, and to take the estate brought to him from Braintree, provided, &c. Legacies are also made to the wife and children of his eldest son Samuel, deceased; to his Sons Shadrach, Joseph, and Benjamine; to his son John; to his son Eleazar; to his “daughter Sarah, wife of Samuel Hoar;” and to his grandson, Samuel Wilbor.

The inventory of his estate was 772l. 9d., a large estate in those days. By the date of his will, and the date it was probated, he must have died late in 1696, or early in 1697.

It is almost certain that all who bear this family name in this country have descended from this first family of Boston; those in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and the adjacent towns in Massachusetts, mostly from the two settled on the island.

From them, and from Joseph and Shadrach of Taunton, the descendants have spread almost, if not quite, into every State in the Union.

To show how rapidly and easily they extend over the country, the compiler has now (1871), unless quite recently deceased, a brother and sister, nephews and nieces and cousins, in Maine; a brother, nephews, and niece in Maryland; two first cousins and several second cousins in Illinois; two first cousins in Vermont; two more distant relatives in Iowa; a nephew in New York; and many near and more distant relatives in Massachusetts; and he has heard of persons of the name in other States, in New Hampshire, Ohio, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Utah. They invariably refer their origin to Rhode Island or Massachusetts, or their vicinities.

Research Notes

Notes ==It is believed that Shadrach along with his parents, Samuel and Anne, and his two surviving brothers, Samuel, Jr. and Joseph, (Arthur and William having died in infancy in England) sailed to New England in 1630 with the Winthrop Fleet; possibly on the Arabella.

The fleet consisted of eleven vessels: Arabella (the flagship), Ambrose, William and Francis, Talbot, Hopewell, Jewel, Whale, Charles, Success, Mayflower, and Trial. The first five ships sailed April 8 from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and arrived at Salem, Massachusetts Bay, June 13. The other half of the fleet sailed in May and arrived in July, at various dates. About seven hundred passengers are presumed to have been on these ships.Wilbur-403 12:08, 18 July 2018 (UTC) Page 192: Usurpation Papers. XLIV. Order for S. Wilbore's imprisonment. The paper subsequently spoken of, called in question the late Tax law. To the Sheriff of the County of Suffolk. Whereas Shadrack Wilbore, Town clerk of Taunton, hath lately in the name and with the consent of the said Town, written and published a certain scandalous, factious and seditious writing therein, very much reflecting upon and contemning the laws, authority and government of this his Majesty's Territory and Dominion of New England. The which writing, upon his examination before his Excellency in Council, he hath confessed andowned. These are, therefore, in his Majesty's name, to require and com- mand you to take into your custody, the body of the said Shadrack Wilbore, and him safely keep in his Majesty's jail, until he shall have answered for the said contempt and misdemeanor, and be from thence delivered by due course of his Majesty's Laws. Whereof fail not. And for so doing, this shall be your warrant. Dated in Boston, the 30th day of August, 1687. By order in Council.
