Sir James COCKBURN of that ilk, 1st Bart., chr. 7 Nov 1628 at Duns, Berwickshire, Grissell HAY, d. by 1706. Apprenticed to Patrick NICOLL, merchant, Edinburgh, 22 Sep 1647. Mentioned in his father's will, 1652. Admitted as burgess and guild brother of Edinburgh, 3 Mar 1658. At his children's baptisms in 1658 and 1660, a merchant. Created a baronet, 24 May 1671, for his services at the Battle of Worcester (1651). Master to apprentice William COCKBURN, son of John COCKBURN of Lantoun (Langton), Edinburgh, 27 Jun 1677. A merchant, master to apprentice William GULLAND, Edinburgh, 13 Nov 1678. A merchant, master to apprentice John GEILS, Edinburgh, 6 Sep 1682. Described as deceased at his daughter Kathrine's marriage in 1702, but with his son William, gave bonds of provision to his daughters Agnes, Elizabeth, Grizel, Isobel and Bethia, 19 Nov 1703. Deceased by 12 Nov 1706, when a bond by him was discharged.
