About Stephanus Boekenoogen

From William J. Hoffman's genealogical work on the Boukenoughe family comes the following passage on Pages 173-4 about Stephanus:

Stephanus Boekenhove (as the name was usually written) established himself at New York where he became a freeman Sept. 6, 1698, occupation tailor. He visitied Holland in 1694 when his brother Joost furnished him with 500 Carolus Guilders "to engage in commerse advantageous to both". Joost gave a power-of-attorney to his friend Reyndert Jansz Vetermaker at Philadelphia on Jan 11, 1701 to demand an accounting from his brother Stephanus at New York.

Stephanus mar. with a license at New York May 7, 1696 (Supplement p. 12) Hanna Holst, most probably a daughter of Laurens Laurensz Holst (1), from Bremen, and Hilletje Gerrits his wife (see Appendix). Hannah Holst was mentioned as a widow on Jul 23, 1728 (BDC: 483) and was probably the Annatje Boekenhove who died at N.Y. Mar 28, 1743. She became a member of the Dutch Reformed church at New York Mar. 2, 1699, while he became a member of this church, apparently renouncing his Quaker faith, on Feb. 24, 1713 "on confession of faith". His name appears thus in "Laws of New York", Vl. I: 979 "Stephen Bockenhove his Exec's or Assigns the Quanity of thirty seven ounces ten penny weight of plate aforesaid" in 1694.

(1) It should be pointed out, however, that Stephanus had no sons Laurens which seems rather strange according to the prevailing Dutch custom. However, Laurens had died bef. 1699. See under No. ii above (refers to daughter Hillegondt). The data in the Appendix almost certainly prove the above parentage.
