From William J. Hoffman's genealogical work on the Boukenoughe family comes the following passage on Pages 173 about Styje:
Styje Boekenoogen mar. at Germantown Gerrit Hendericksz de Wees, widower fo Marya...who had arrived in 1685, with his family and servant, from Kriegsheim in the Palatinate. He was mentioned on the tax list in 1693. De Wees was one of the four signers of the firts formal protest against slavery in America addressed to the monthly Quaker meeting on April 18, 1688. He died before 1701 when his widow sold land. She remarried Oct. 1701 as "Sophia Johnson", as she was called, Richard Armitt a prominent Quacker merchant of Philadelphia who had emigrated to PA in 1700. The meeting of Friends as Leek, Staffordshire, England, under date of 2 Oct. 1701, gave a certificate, in which is set forth that Richard Armitt had transported himself to Philadelphia in 1700 and that previously he had "followed his trade in London, and made some voyages to Spain and other places". this certificate was signed by many members of the meeting, his father John Armitt being among them. His mother was deceased at the time. He was selected by the Common Council of Philadelphia on 13 Oct. 1733 as Clerk of the Market and Collector of the Stall Rents; on 6 Feb. 1727 Wharfinger of the Wharfs of the City; on Aug. 4 1729 he was chosen to keep th fire engine in repairs, and play the same once a month, for $3 per annum". He died at Philadelphia 7 Aug. 1748. His wife predeceased him 25 MArch 1740. They had children and many descendants.
