Susannah WRIGHT(1) was born on 5 Aug 1627 in England.(239) From the NEHG Register, Volume 84, October 1930

Parentage of Susanna Wright, wife of Richard Pearce of Portsmouth, R.I. Contributed by Benjamin Franklin Wilbour of Little Compton, R.I.

In the "Pearce Genealogy," by Col. Frederick C. PIERCE, which was published in 1888 and relates chiefly to Richard Pearce of Portsmouth, R.I., and his descendants, it is stated that Richard Pearce's father was of Bristol, England, and that Richard himself was born in England in 1615, was at Portsmouth, R.I., as early as 1654, and married in Portsmouth, in 1642, Susannah Wright, who was born in 1620. Susannah Wright is said to have been the daughter of George Wright of Newport, R.I., who was probably at Salem, Mass., in 1637, and at Newport in 1648. (Pearce Genealogy, pp. 37, 38). Without considering here the question whether the English home and date of birth of Richard Pearce was given correctly in the "Pearce Genealogy," there is no doubt that the mainden name of Richard Pearce's wife was Susanna Wright; but she was the daughter not of George Wright of Newport but of John Wright of Waltham Abbey, Co. Essex, England, yeoman, as the following entry in the "Aspinwall Notarial Records" proves.

1647 Richard Pierce of Prudence Island in the Narrowgansett Bay did acknowledge the receipt of twnety pounds of Elizabeth Dell Executrix of the last will & Testament of Raph Dell of Bow in Middlesex due as a Legacie unto his wife Susanna daughter of John Wrighte of Walton [Waltham] Abbey parish in Essex yeoman; & doth acquitt & discharge the said Elisabeth of the said Legacie & every part thereof. Signed & sealed the 14 (7) before me the Not. publ. 1647. (Aspinwall Notarial Records, pp. 85-86, Boston, 1903)

The following records supply further information about the parentage and English connections of Susanna Wright, the wife of Richard Pearce, and show, inter alia, that she was baptized at Waltham Abbey 5 Aug. 1627 (not 1620) and was married there (not at Portsmouth, R.I.), 5 May 1642, to Richard Pierce [not Pearce]. He and his wife must, therefore, have migrated to New England between the date of their marriage and 14 Sept. 1647, when Richard Pierce acknowledged the receipt of the legacy due to his wife under the provisions of the will of Ralph Dell.

As the researcher in this matter their are questions I would ask? The dates an prior research don't make sence to me. (1) Did Richard Pearce come to America on the Ship Lyon with his uncle William and his father Richard, as stated by previous researchers? (2) The ship Lyon made three voyages 1630, 1631, 1632. William Peirse was the Master of the Lyon in 1630, and sail on only one trip as her Master. (3) Did Richard return to England to marry this Susanna Wright? (4) If Richard came to America in 1630 with his father Richard and his uncle William on the Ship Lyon how or when did he return to England? (5) Was Richard left behind in England with relatives or friends when his mother Martha and father Richard migrated to America on the ship Lyon in 1630. (6) What vessel did Richard and this Susanna Wright travel to America on and what were the dates? (7) Where is futher evidence that Richard Pearce lived or way any were near Prudence Island in Narrowgansett Bay?

I think Franklin Wilbour may be incorrect in his assumptions! She has reference number 7TSX-Q3. Parents: George WRIGHT. She was married to Richard PEARCE about 1642 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Children were: Martha PEARCE, John PEARCE, Richard PEARCE, Giles PEARCE, Susannah PEARCE, Mary PEARCE, William PEARCE, Jeremiah PEARCE, Isaac PEARCE, George PEARCE (King Philip's War) , James PEARCE, Samuel PEARCE .

Austin in the Rhode Island Genealogical Directory states that George Wright of Portsmouth, RI is her father, not John.

Siblings: John christened 20 February 1624/5, Amy born 1626, Ellen born 1630, Anna christened 29 September 1634, Ralph christened 26 September 1635, and Henry christened 16 May 1637.

F.C. Pierce, Pearce Genealogy.

In the "Pearce Genealogy," by Col. Frederick C. “Without considering here the question whether the English home and the date of birth of Richard Pearce are given correctly in the "Pearce Genealogy," there is no doubt that the maiden name of Richard Pearce's wife was Susanna Wright; but she was the daughter not of George Wright of Newport but of John Wright of Waltham Abbey, co. The entry in the Aspinwall Notarial Records, published Boston, 1903, pp. 85-86:

"Richard Pierce of Prudence Island in the Narrowgansett Bay did acknowledge the receite of twenty pounds of Elizabeth Dell Executrix of the last will & Testament of Raph Dell of Bow in Middlesex due as a Legacie unto his wife Susanna daughter of John Wrighte of Walton [Waltham] Abbey parish in Essex yeoman: & doth acquitt & discharge the said Elisabeth of the said Legacie & every part thereof. Signed & sealed the 14 (7) before me the Not. publ. 1647."

Thus, it appears certain that Richard Peirce/Pierce/Pearce and his wife Susannah, related to the Dells of Middlesex, were in America as early as 1647.
