Theophilus "Christopher" Elswaert

Biography

Christopher Theophilus Ellsworth was born about 1625 in Bristol, England. He was a mariner and subsequently a boat builder. He moved to Smitsteechje, Amsterdam and married there, on June 1, 1647 Annatje Jans. He emigrated with his wife and one child to New Amsterdam in April 1652 on De Romeyn, and resided in Smits Valley (on the East River at Pearl Street), New Amsterdam. HIs will was dated April 9, 1706 and proved February 21, 1716. He sometimes appears in a Dutch version as Christoffel Theophilus Elswaert, or with Christoffel shorted to Stoffel. His daughter Elizabeth appears as Lysbeth Stoffels.

If it is true that his daughter Brechtie was born in the Netherlands in 1648, then Annetie Jans must have come to New Amsterdam later than 1648.

A detailed genealogy of the Elsworth family is in "The New York Genealogical and Biogramhical Record" Vol 64,1933 pp. 154-66 255-67 Immigrated to The Netherlands sometime prior to the 1 June 1647 proclamation of this marriage to Annetye Jans. They came to New Amsterdam about 1650.

This is outdated genealogy. The Elsworth genealogy has moved on a lot since that was published in 1933. Much more correct information is available than it was then so please ignore this publication as a basis of fact.

Theophilus-1 Elsworth (ca. 1625–ca. 1712) of New Amsterdam, is frequently—albeit erroneously—identified as a son of Sir John Ellsworth and Lucia (Bower) of Cambridgeshire, England. Theophilus was not of noble birth; he and his wife, Annetje Jans, were “both unable to write, and the part of [Amsterdam] where they lived was of the very humblest.” (Randolph, 155).

Older genealogies frequently included “three brothers came to America” tales and some fraudulent professionals invented noble origins for immigrant ancestors to satisfy clients seeking greater social status. Others have attempted to validate lines of descent from Sir John and Lucia (Bower) Ellsworth to other immigrants of colonial New England named Aylsworth, Ellsworth, etc. No original records have been found to document the existence of the Ellsworth-Bower family.
