Matthys married twice and raised a large family from his first wife, Lysbeth Elswaert (Ellsworth). Their children were baptized at the New Amsterdam Dutch Reformed Church in New York City between the years 1676 and 1688. Included in their eight children, were Abraham and Sarah, twins baptized on Sept. 20, 1685.
