About Thomas of Borthwick
THOMAS OF BORTHWICK (aka THOMAS DE BORTHWICK)
An ancestry has not been identified for Thomas of Borthwick, although, according to the tradition of the Borthwick family, they are descended from a Livonian Knight named Andreas Burtick, who was attached to the Court of Hungary. National Records of Scotland, Papers of the Borthwick Family reference GD1/1404 Andreas is said to have come to Scotland in the company of Edgar the Aetheling and his sister Margaret. [George Way of Plean and RomillySquire, Scottish Clan and Family Encyclopedia (harper Collins Publishers, 1994, pp. 74-5 for the Borthwick Family] Edgar died in about 1126 Wikipedia: Edgar the Aetheling and his sister Margaret, afterwards Saint Margaret of Scotland, died on 16 November 1093. Saint Margaret of Scotland
Thomas of Borthwick had a charter for the half-lands of Ligertwood from John of Gordon of that Ilk. The charter is undated but it belongs to the period that falls between 1357 and 1367. In 1368 his son and heir William of Bortheick was concerned in a cause with Thomas de Hay, regarding the lands of Middleton in Midlothian, and it might reasonably be supposed that Thomas of Borthwick may have died before this date.
