Thomas Collver; will probated 27 Sept 1786, names five children

  1. Amos Collver, will probated 4 June 1810, mentions seven children: Amos, Jr., Thomas, John, Jerusha (Mrs. Andrews), Esther (Mrs. Daball), Anna (Mrs. Woodworth), and Hannah (Mrs. Bellows).

2. Simon Collver, b. 1745, d. 11 July 1828; went through the Revolutionary War.

Notes:

Thomas had a son, Simon, April 17, 1745, married Jemima Tuttle, born June 30, 1752. He died July 20, 1828. She died Nov. 2, 1843.

Their son, David J., born Jan. 16, 1787, married April 8, 1809, Margaret Myers, born May 14, 1792. Their children were: George W., born Feb. 4, 1810; Simon B.J., Jacob M., Amos, Edward, John M., Clarissa, Polly, V.H., Jemima , Nathan, Elizabeth S., Catherine and Andrew J.

David J. and wife removed from Schooley’s Mountain to Lafayette in 1844. He attended the Centennial celebration at Newton in 1876, wearing a cap of Liberty, and sang the ode “Liberty Tree” there. He is said to have organized the first Sunday school in northern New Jersey on Schooley’s Mountain in 1818. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He died Dec. 12, 1878, his wife in Jan. 1866.

His son, George W., married Sept. 21, 1833, Mary S., daughter of Thomas Kays, of Lafayette, born April 12, 1816. She died July 4, 1842. He married for a second wife Jan. 19, 1843, Dorcus P., sister to his first wife. The children by his first wife were: Hannah C., Margaret, Gabriel, Henry K., George H., by his second wife, a daughter Mary E., who married William H. Couse.

The name Collver’s Gap, as applied to the pass through the mountains west of Branchville, is undoubtedly adapted from the family of Collver, more particularly it is presumed from Rev. Jabez Collver before mentioned, who preached at Beemer Meeting House thirty years, leaving there for Canada on account of his tory preferences in 1793. He preached in Canada until his death in 1818.

In the Name of God Amen

     I Thomas Colver of the Township of Roxbury, County of Morris and state of New Jersey, living weak in body, But of sound Memory, blessed by god for all his xxxxxxxx this sixth day of March 1786, make this my last will and Testament in manner following. My will is that all my Just Debts be paid, and that my burial may be decent without pomp, at the descretion of my Executors. Imfirm is My Will is and I order, that my Estate where I now live be divided, after my Decease, into three Equal parts, my son Amos Colver to have one third part, my son Simon Colver, one third part and my Grandson Thomas Colver, son of Ephraim Colver deceased, one third part of said Estate. And my will is and I order that my son Thomas Colver shall prossess and enjoy forever, forty acres more or less where he now lives on and that my Daughter Lydia Winkler shall and may possess and enjoy forever fifteen acres where she formally lived on to be taken before the division is make between my two sons and grandson.

I give and bequeath unto my three sons Amos Colver, Thomas Colver and Simon Colver all my moveable estate both goods and Chattles, to be equally divided between them and my will is and I order that five pounds be paid to Ephraim Tuttle the third, out of my moveable Estate by my said three sons, Amos Colver, Thomas Colver and Simon Colver or their heirs or assigns after my Dicease.

And lastly I nominate, Constitute and assign to my sons Thomas Colver Jun. and Simon Colver my Sole Executors of this my last will and testament Revoaking and Disannulling all others. In witness whereof I this said Thomas Colver have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year abovewritten.

+ 170 iii. Ephraim Culver, died Bef. 1786 in Knowltoon, Sussex Co., New Jersey.

Born about 1703-1704 per spacing of siblings birth years. Third son of John Colver 1670-1760.

No gravestone documented. Thomas and his wife's burial location is unknown, but the likely location is the Colver Family Burial Ground established by his father John Colver (d.1760). At that time of Thomas' death the Burial Ground was on land inherited by Thomas' brother Robert Colver; with Thomas owning the adjacent parcel later inherited by Thomas' eldest son Amos. Amos, son of Thomas, and Amos' wife (her name is unknown) are buried here according to instructions in Amos' will.
