About Timothy Rogers
Biography
Timothy Rogers was born Apr. 23, 1650,[1] son of John Rogers and Francis (Unknown) Rogers. His parentage is established by the fact that he was mentioned in his father's will.[2] Timothy was probably born about 1643, based on his admittance as a townsman of Marshfield Feb 14, 1664/5,[3] at which time he was probably no longer a minor (under 21). He was probably born in Scituate in the Plymouth Colony.[3]
Timothy married Eunice Stetson, daughter of "Cornet" Robert Stetson.[3][4] In his 1702 will, Cornet Robert Stetson mentions his daughter, Eunice Rogers, then living.[4][3] TImothy and Eunice were probably married about 1669.[5][6] Their date of marriage was probably estimated based on the 1670 date of baptism of their first born known child. They were probably married in either Scituate or Marshfield. They settled at Marshfield.[6]
Timothy and Eunice had the following children. Based on Timothy's residency in Marshfield from 1664 until his death, they were probably all born in Marshfield, although the baptisms of some were recorded in the Scituate records. The children are set forth below, based on probable birth order based on birth/baptismal dates (to the extent known) and order in which mentioned in Timothy's will.
Samuel, bpt. September 15,[3] September 18,[7][3] or October 2, 1670,[6] m. December 3, 1697 Jael Huet,[8] d. 1747[6]
Lois, bpt. August 27, 1671,[9][3] d. young[3][6] but see "Notes" below
John,[3][6] m. December 11, 1700 Hannah Sprague,[10] d. 1762[10]
Timothy, bpt. March 31, 1674 [11]or May 31, 1674,[3][6] d. young[3][6]
Eunice,[12][6] m. Mary 26, 1698 Samuel Witherell[13]
Bethiah, probably died unmarried,[3][6] but see "Notes" below
Hannah,[3][6] m. November 19, 1701 Samuel Lapham,[13] d. before May 19, 1741[13]
Mary,[3][6] m. December 22, 1709 John Carver[13]
Honour,[3][6] m. July 12, 1711 William Torrey[10]
Timothy. b. in 1690, according to age on gravestone,[3][6] m. February 9, 1719/20 Lydia Hatch,[14] d. December 10, 1763[14]
Timothy Rogers was admitted a townsman of Marshfield February 14, 1664/5; witnessed a Friend's marriage certificate in 1678; was freed from bearing arms on account of lameness in 1681; administered the estate of Nathaniel Parker in 1690; is mentioned in the laying out of a road (apparently near Rogers Brook) in 1692; and on March 29, 1699, gave to his son, John Rogers of Marshfield, "Land in Marshfield where I now dwell, about 40 acres, bounded by land of my brother Joseph Rogers."[3]
The will of Timothy Rogers of Marshfield, "Taylor," dated March 24, 1724/5, proven August 5, 1728, mentions sons Samuel and John; daughters Bethiah Rogers, Hannah Torrey, Eunice Witherel, Mary Carver, and Hannah Lapham; granddaughter Judith Rogers, wife of Joseph Rogers; son-in-law, William Torrey; and son Timothy, to whom he gives the bulk of his property, and whom he makes executor of his will.[15]
Based on the administrative papers for Timothy's estate, it is probable that Timothy died in 1728 sometime before August of that year.[15]
Research Notes
Added by Thomas H. Moody, 2/13/2018:
In March 1688/9, "Cornelious Jones was presented in court for "saying that he believed he had got Timothy Rogers' daughter with child and saying he had layen with her several times." Jury found him guilty.[16]
Age-wise it would seem that this incident must have involved either Lois or Bethiah Rogers. Is it possible that this child was the granddaughter Judith Rogers mentioned in Timothy's will? As Bethiah never married, it might be conjectured that she was the daughter and thus the child Judith was raised in the Timothy Rogers household.
Judith Rogers was born abt. 1788/9 and married Joseph Rogers, her 2nd cousin, abt 1710. Joseph and Judith's children were: Moses, Susanna, and Joanna
Added by Thomas Moody, 2/13/2018:
In June 1688, Nathaniel Parker (Sciutate) and Lois Rogers were found guilty by jury for fornication “(but being married together at this Court) were sentenced to pay a find of five pounds.”[17]
The child would appear to be Margaret Parker (b. abt. 1688 - September 11, 1759) who married at the court in 1688.
This would mean that Timothy's daughter Lois did not die young, but must have died before her father's will was written. Timothy Roger's did not leave anything to his granddaughter Margaret Parker, likely because she had already married Sampson about 1708/9.
Nathaniel died in Phipps’ expedition against Quebec.(Battle of Quebec, Oct. 1690)
