I am a burgher of the late SA Republic. I surrendered on 13 Sept 1900 at Kaapsche Hoek in the Bush Veldt – I surrendered tender the proclamation of Lord Roberts. I have received £279 on receipt for cattle, JH Swart who is since dead had my power of attorney and he surrendered my stock and received a receipt in his name. After his death I made application for the same and obtained the money – as my brother held my power of attorney, he was told to make application in his own name – that is the reason he made the claim for them. The poles were taken the same day my wife was taken away. I surrendered with my saddle and bridle and bought the column to where my cart and horses were.
Signed 30 July 1903.

MJ Swart: I am the brother in law of WH Swart. I was with him on the day of surrender. He had with him a cart and 3 horses and a saddle and bridle and harnas for the horses.
Signed 30 July 1903

Jacobus Hermanus Swart:
Brother in law and cousin to WH Swart. On commando till 21 August 1900. Surrendered to British Troops at Middelburg. Took oath of neutrality. Returned to my fram. Did not take up arms again. Remained on farm till 2nd February 1901 when Gnl Kurx column visited the farm and took me to Standerton. All wood work was used for firewood. Fowl and pigs were killed and destroyed the crops by driving the cattle of the column in to it to graze the mielies. Told the troops the property belongs to a surrendered burgher. There was no fighting on the farm that day. The reason I was not commandeered by the British was because I had scematism (?) in the leg.

Claim of Jacobus Hermanus Swart (power of attiorney for WH Swart) Dead. Next of Kin Mother Elisabeth Katrina Swart. Died in Standerton camp 15 Dec 1901.

Elizabeth Katriena Swart. Hy was my oudste seun.

JH Swart:

Brothers in law = 2 surrendered in Standerton
1 on commando
Sons none

Boy Coffee.
Die eis word nie toegelaat nie omdat JH Swart later gevind is “as being under arms after taking the oath of neutrality”.
