  • Comments :
  • Discussion points for why William Craig (1685-1758) of Scotland and of Augusta County, Va may not be the father of Rev. John Craig (1709-1774), Augusta County, VA, (posted by Ray Clinebelle, September 25, 2020)
    • There seems to be only an implied reason for Rev John Craig Sr being a son of William (1685-1756) because William had a son named John. (I have been looking at this since 2017.)
      • In the extensive biographical and Augusta Stone Church writings of Rev. John, there is no mention of his parents or brothers.
        • The "Dictionary of Virginia Biography" writes "Rev. John Craig's parents have not been identified."
        • The writings are very clear that Rev. John came in 1734 from Ireland by Edinburgh to PA, America. Parents and siblings not listed here.
      • There are baptismal records of Rev, John baptizing 4 children of Robert Craig between 1741-1749. So Rev. John new some of the William's family but no mention of them otherwise.
      • William and Janet Craig with sons Robert, James and John came to PA in 1721-22 per passenger lists.
      • William and Janet Craig with sons Robert, James and John and families came to Augusta VA by 1741.
      • The will and probate (proved:26 Nov 1759, Augusta County Court House Records) for William Craig lists Janet, Robert, James and John, but not a Rev. John Craig.
  • Early History of William A. Craig in America, Posted 13 Apr 2017 by lyonseeker
    • William Alexander Craig, his wife Janet Craig nee Stuart and children (sons William, John, Robert and James and daughter Sarah) came to America from Ireland before 1733, with 1721/22 their most likely time of arrival.
    • In 1732 they were living in Chester County, PA.
    • In 1737, son James was living in London Grove, Lancaster County (proven by law suit record of Hartley vs Craig).
    • In 1740, the family minus William (who died in Pennsylvania) migrated south to Virginia, and the whole family was living in Augusta County, VA by 1745 as attested by baptismal records of Reverand John Craig.
    • William and family settled in present day Rockingham County, VA (part of Augusta Co at that time) on Cub Run about one mile from the Shenandoah River.
    • William died in 1759 and his will was recorded in Staunton, VA.
    • Sons James and Robert settled permanently in the Mt. Meridian area of Augusta County. Robert resided on the Middle River near the present village of Mt. Meridian in Augusta County.
    • The youngest son, John, purchased "...land from the Franciscos" in 1748 located on Cub Run in present day Rockingham County, VA.
