About William Garrigues

William Garrigues, a Quaker, signed this Philadelphia 1783 anti-slavery petition:

He was also an officer of the Carpenter's Company, the oldest craft guild in North America, in 1788, 91 and 92. ( Carpenter's Company of the City and County of Philadelphia, Brown, 1887). Served as Vice-President, 1800, 1802.

"The primary object of the Association was to 'obtain instruction in the science of architecture; to assist such of its members, or the widows and children of members as should be in need of support' and the adoption of such a system of measurement and prices that everyone concerned in building may have the value of his money, and every workman the worth of his labor."

1798: Insurance Surveyor, Foreman, Jury Member for Bank Robbery

1799-1800 Member of a Committee of Prison Inspectors who prepared a report on the condition of prisoners in Philadelphia.

Image: Carpenter's Hall, Philadelphia William Garrigues was a prosperous carpenter and master builder in Philadelphia. He was a founding member of Carpenters' Hall. In 1794 he was hired by the Insurance Company of North America as a surveyor of houses and buildings.

William was an early advocate of the abolition of slavery. In 1783, he and his brother Edward were among a group of Quakers who signed a petition to Congress to end slavery
