About William Mendenhall
William Mendenhall, the eldest son of William Mendenhall and second wife Louisa Dickinson, was born Jan. 30th, 1861and died in battle. He belonged to the Natal Carbineers, and was killed in the Battle of Isandlwana, on Jan. 22nd, 1879, in the Zulu War.
On the day William died, 23 members of the Natal Carbineers regiment perished in that battle. Most of the dead from all the British units were buried in common graves marked with "cairns" of rocks, similar to the one on his profile picture.
A war memorial monument was built in Pietermaritzburg. William's name is inscribed on the monument.
