Speaker John Smith had occasion, March 13, 1657, as presiding officer of the House of Burgesses, to voice the refusal of the members to accept the order of dissolution by the Governor, was one of the original trustees of the College of William & Mary, 1693 - 1698 and served as a Burgess from Gloucester. At the time of his marriage, he was the Speaker of the Virginia House of Burgesses.
