William Essex Winston was born circa 1703/04 in Essex county, in the Virginia Colony, the son of William Winston (born 1678) and his first wife, Sarah Dabney. [1]

Major William "Essex" Winston - was called "Essex" to distinguish him from his two first cousins named William Winston. The nickname "Essex" came from the fact he was raised in Essex Co., where they lived while his father was married to his 2nd wife Mrs. Martha Tomlin, the widow of Edward Gouldman until her death in 1722.

The following is the proof that William "Essex" Winston was the sole heir of his mother, Sarah (Dabney) Winston. His older brother, Isaac having died without heirs.

King William County, Virginia William Winston to Cornelius Dabney 17 May 1732 - William WINSTON now of King and Queen to Cornelius DABNEY of King William Co., VA, Gentleman, for 5 shillings sells land in the Pamunkey Neck, King William Co., it being a tract granted to Sarah DABNEY by patent bearing date 25 Apr 1701 and by the said Wm. WINSTON as son and heir to the said Sarah DABNEY, bounded by the south side of Poncey Swamp, Cornelius Dabney's land, Wormley's land, Dorothy Trice's land, and the water course of Poncey Swamp, paying yearly rent for one year. Wits. John Crowshaw, Richard Gregory, Jas. or Jos. Berkley, Jr. - Acknowledged 18 May 1732, King William Co., VA

The deed shows that Cornelius DABNEY (son of James) in 1732 held land which in the patent to Sarah DABNEY dated 1701 was held by James DABNEY. (See the 4 patents )

He soon moved from King & Queen back to Hanover, the place of his birth.

There are many records in Hanover, in central Virginia & Northamption Co., NC where they held land inherited by his wife Rebecca (Bobby) Winston.

Comments

His mother was Sarah DABNEY never D'Aubigney, from a long line of documented English Dabneys. AND Cornelius DABNEY and his 2 wives had 8 children (never 12) all with detailed documentation.
