About Jacob Emery

[Additional curator notes for this profile -- Jonathan Emery m. Jerhsua Barron - they were connected to Newbury, Haverhill and Darcut before going into Maine to Winthrop and then to Fairfield where Jonathan built the first framed house. His family and descendnats were of Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts and went into Maine in and around Kennebec. It is extremely unlikely that they went to New Jersey to have this one son. DO NOT add them as parents of Jacob. -- Maria Edmonds-Zediker, curator, 1/29/11]

A family Bible existed at one time - Does it still exist - did it really exist? is it in tact with the title page of the Bible and ink and handwriting varied proving entries were made at the time of or near the event. this notation was found in a family tree file on ancestry.com:

The identity of George and Johannah as the parents of Jacob Emery is based mainly on information found in a hand written copy of Jacob Emery's bible record, furnished by Wilma C. Myrehn - this was false information that has been passed around for years as to the so-called 'family bible'

Future applicants must provide proof of service (and possibly residence) that meets current standards.

Jacob Emery is listed in N.J. Rateables as having been taxed in Elizabeth Twp, Essex Co., NJ in 1779 and 1780 on 1 horse,1 head of cattle and £200 out at interest.

In 1782, he and Elizabeth were baptized in and become members of the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown, NJ May 5, 1782 Jacob Emery & Elizabeth his wife. are recorded as Half-Members History of the First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, N.J.

The church is now a private residence, but the adjacent graveyard is still in use.

It is possible he served in the War of 1812 as a Private in Capt. Alexander Reading's Company of Infantry, Second Regt NJ Detailed Militia, Sussex Co, from Sept. 8, 1814 to Dec. 5, 1814 - although this would mean he was well into his fifties when he enlisted.)

According to the land records (Bk D3, page 84, April 4, 1825), Mary Shay, formerly Mary Emery, of Sandyston, Sussex County, transferred lands formerly belonging to Jacob Emery, to Joseph Fleming (husband of Elizabeth Shay, grandaughter of Jacob Emery).

Jacob died April 21, 1824 in Sussex Co, NJ, at 64 years of age. Apparently Jacob died without making a will, because on 4/30/1824 Jonathan Emery and Luther Clark, according to Sussex Co. records, were appointed to administer his estate. They submitted an inventory of property made on the 24th of April, showing a value of $722.54, which included horses, a wagon and harness, cattle, sheep, and swine, as well as household goods, Inv. 30 Apr 1824; Proved 30 Apr 1824.
