About Pvt Evan Bevans

Evan Bevans was born in 1762 in Wales. Upon arrival to American, he settled in Morris County and later moved to Sussex.
In 1786, Evan married Hannah Colver, daughter of Rev. Jabez Colver and Anna Smith Colver, and had one son, Moses in 1788. After the passing of his first wife, on December 7, 1791, Evan married Catharine Carmer in Machackemeck (Deerpark), Suffolk, New York. Evan and Caty had ten children born In Sandyston, Sussex, New Jersey; John (1792), Elizabeth (1795), Jacob (1796), Nicholas (1798), Catherine (1803-1840, m. G. Abraham Van Auken), Abraham (1804-1877), Sarah (1806), Sidney (1808-1889), Jacob (1812), and John (1815-1894).
Evan was 15 when he joined the Revolutionary war effort but was only allowed to be a drummer boy until he was old enough to fight at 16. He served as Private with the Morris County New Jersey Militia. Evan was also founder of the Bevans family of North Jersey.
Evan Bevans died in 1849 and is buried with his wife at Mettler Cemetery in Sandyston, Sussex County, New Jersey.
