  • THOMAS PHILBRICK,* or Philbrook is supposed to have come from England in 1630, or not much later, and settled in Watertown, Mass. He is said to have been a mariner in early life, and to have been master of a vessel before he emigrated from Lincolnshire in England. There is no doubt that he and his family were settled in Watertown in 1636. ....
  • .... His wife, Elizabeth, died, 12 mo. 19, 1663, and in March, 1664, when he made his will, he calls himself "very aged." He d. in 1667.

  • I. Thomas Philbrick was married and had children, who were grown up before his emigration. On his arrival in New England, he went to Watertown and after a few years' residence there, the whole family removed to Hampton, though not all at the same time. The order in which the children are here named may not be the order of their births. His wife Elizabeth died Feb. 19, 1664. Mr. Philbrick probably died in 1667, as his will was proved on the 8th of October in that year. Children :

"The first Philbrick who came to Rye was Joseph, about the year 1700, and settled near the house of Francis Jenness, in the south part of the town. He was the grandson of Thomas Philbrick, who came from Lincolnshire, England, with Sir Richard Saltenstall, and settled in Watertown in 1630, and removed to Hampton in 1645, and died in 1667, very aged. Joseph died Nov. 7, 1755, in his ninety-third year."

From the History of Rye, New Hampshire: page 457: "The first Philbrick who came to Rye was Joseph, about the year 1700, and settled near the house of Francis Jenness, in the south part of the town. He was the grandson of Thomas Philbrick, who came from Lincolnshire, England, with Sir Richard Saltenstall, and settled in Watertown in 1630, and removed to Hampton in 1645, and died in 1667, very aged. Joseph died Nov. 7, 1755, in his ninety-third year."

page 489: "He was the first of the name to come to Rye and settled about 1702 near Daniel Dalton's, near the house of Frances Jenness. He was ordered to court for building a house on the town's land. It is said that his wife was a daughter of one of the first three settlers of Hampton."
