Boer Officers 1899-1902. Gen Lucas Johannes Meyer. “The Lion of Vryheid”. B. 1846 and d. 8/8/1902 in Brussels and buried in Vryheid. Served at Majuba. President iof the “Nieuwe Republiek” with its capital , Vryheid. First chairman of the ZAR Volksraad. Friend and supporter of Cmdt Gen Piet Joubert. Started the ABW as Gen in charge of the left wing of the army in Natal with c.4 000 burghers and Veldkornet Louis Botha as his ADC. A systems failure, i.e. lack of discipline, men not being in place, failure by Gen ”Maroela” Eramus and Weilbach to support Meyer; and flaunting of orders and awol contributed to the failure of a rather good plan by Joubert i.e. storming down the hill and beating the hell out of William Penn-Symons KIA there and Yule with roughly the same size force - which turned the battle of Talana from a certain victory into a reverse. Gen Meyer fell ill and handed command over to Louis Botha. He was a signatory of the Treaty of Vereeniging and he then visited Europe where he died. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Talana_Hill
