Profile of the Day: Doris Roberts
Yesterday, news broke of the passing of actress Doris Roberts. She was perhaps best remembered for her role on the hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.
Roberts was born Doris May Green on November 4, 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri. When she was 10, her father left the family. She would later take on her stepfather’s name Roberts as her own. Roberts discovered acting at an early age and dropped out of college to pursue acting full time. She made many appearances on stage, television and film, but didn’t achieve much of her fame until much later in life when she landed the role of Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond. For nine seasons, Roberts starred as the meddling mother to Ray Ramano’s character on the long running comedy. She would earn seven Emmy Award nominations for the role and win four.
Roberts died peacefully of natural causes in her home in Los Angeles, California on April 17 at the age of 90.
