He was born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to a Hindu family in the merchant caste. After studying law in London, Gandhi lived in South Africa for 21 years where he faced discrimination because of his heritage. It was there that he first began to develop his philosophy of passive resistance in opposition of discriminatory legislation against Indians. In 1914, he returned to India and became a leader in the country’s movement for independence. He led nationwide campaigns for independence using a policy of noncooperation, nonviolence, and peaceful resistance. India finally achieved independence from British rule on August 15, 1947.
Considered one of the most inspiring figures in history, today Gandhi’s birthday is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
