Happy birthday, Bill Murray! Today the actor turns 66.

William James Murray was born on September 21, 1950 in Evanston, Illinois. He is the fifth of nine children born to Lucille Collins, a mail room clerk, and Edward Joseph Murray, II, a lumber salesman. At the age of 20, Murray was arrested at Chicago’s O’Hara Airport for trying to smuggle 10 lbs of cannabis. He was convicted and sentenced to probation. Looking for a new direction, Murray accepted his brother’s invitation to join him in Chicago’s Second City improv comedy troupe.

After leaving for New York City, Murray signed on as a featured player on Saturday Night Live where he was able to showcase his comedic talents to millions of viewers each week. He successfully segued into film, starring in some of the most memorable comedies including Caddyshack, Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day. Later, Murray stretched his acting chops in dramatic roles and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for the film Lost in Translation.

Ever the unpredictable actor, Murray has filled his time offscreen with an array of activities. Over the weekend, Murray served as a bartender at the opening of his son’s new restaurant in Brooklyn, New York. And just today, the Caddyshack star and his brothers announced the launch of a new golf clothing line, William Murray Golf.
