Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1908 in a small farmhouse in Stonewall, Texas. He was the oldest of five children born to Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr. and Rebekah Baines. Perhaps it was inevitable that Johnson would enter the world of politics. His father had served five terms in the Texas House of Representatives.
Hours after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States on board Air Force One. Johnson’s presidency proved to be a highly active one with sweeping changes in civil rights, health care and education. In 1964, he signed the Civil Rights Act into law, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. The enactment of the Civil Rights Act was a significant step forward in the struggle for equality.
