Marie-Antoinette

On November 2, 1755, Marie-Antoinette, Queen of France, was born in Vienna, Austria. Wife to the infamous King Louis XVI, she is perhaps best remembered for her famous quote addressing the starving French populace, “Let them eat cake.” Marie-Antoinette’s reputation for her frivolous spending and extravagant lifestyle helped provoke the popular unrest that led to the French Revolution and the overthrow of the French monarchy. In 1793, she was executed by guillotine for treason.
