Steve Irwin

Today we remember Steve Irwin, who passed away on this day in 2006 at the age of 44. Known as “The Crocodile Hunter,” Irwin spent much of his life devoted to wildlife conservation and environmentalism. He was born on February 22, 1962 in Victoria, Australia and grew up on a wildlife park owned by his parents. At the age of nine, he began handling crocodiles.

Did you know Irwin and his wife Terri spent their honeymoon trapping crocodiles together? Film footage of their trappings became part of the first episode of Irwin’s television series, The Crocodile Hunter. The show would become a huge success and make Irwin an international star.

Sadly, Irwin died while filming a new television program off the coast of Port Douglas in Queensland, Australia after a stingray pierced his chest by its barb. Today he is remembered for his many contributions to wildlife education and conservation.
