My Grandfather, Hermann Katzenstein served in the German Army in WW1 and returned so I'm not sure why the change of name. I would like to know more about his service and the Iron Cross he won and think this is just as relevant. He gave his Iron Cross to the doctor who looked after him on his deathbed but we know little more. His daughter was murdered at Auschwitz a few years later but both his sons got away a few years earlier. I think understading more about those who served is just as relevant.
