I always feel sorry for poor Rose Stoughton. The manuscript history prepared by her brother Sir Nicholas says their father sent 14 year old Rose to New England with their cousin Capt. Israel Stoughton for safety during the English Civil War. But a quick look at the dates suggests she went after their father died. I always wonder if her brother paid their cousin to take her away and keep her away so he wouldn't have to split the estate with her.
