Geni and MyHeritage combined subscription

My Geni PRO subscription is due for renewal next month.

I'm considering adding a MyHeritage subscription for two reasons: (1) SmartCopy capabilities, and (2) capabilities to contact family members who have entered MyHeritage trees that SmartMatch to living persons in my Geni MAX Extended Family whose names I cannot otherwise deduce.

Do MyHeritage plan to offer a combined membership anytime in the near future?

Do MyHeritage plan to offer badging for Geni PRO and MH, such that a dual subscriber can visibly articulate his dual commitment?

Would like to hear from PRO-MH and Curator-MH duals as to whether subscribing to MH is a worthwhile investment.

Be aware of the difference between a paid MH Account and a MH Database Subscription - be very careful to pay for the one you want.

Hi Gary,

It's a good idea and something we want to offer, but before we can do it we have to build some back-end tools that are not yet on the road map. So unfortunately, Not at this time!

Lois is quite right, you probably want a "data subscription" (sometimes called a research subscription) as opposed to a "site subscription". The latter is what you'd need if you wanted to build a big tree of your own on MyHeritage.com

Kind regards,

Mike at Geni

Gary - just to weigh in as a curator / member.

- I find the MyHeritage data subscription add on enormously helpful.

-- Of course take tree quality with grains of salt -- I think you likely know that the further back in time, the less reliable "unless" source data is transparent; for current time, excellent, comparable with ancestry trees; and as you say, when you recognize the name of the MH tree owner, you can often figure out who they are in your "own" tree. :)

-- the records are getting better & more extensive all the time. Frankly for USA Ancestry is still more complete & comprehensive, but for world wide, MH is the better value.

-- the transparency across platforms is pretty good. I have not however tried to contact across platforms.

-- there are some curators who have trees on MH, i would consider it if making a GED file for instance. And it is an easier method to upload to MH tree and then copy across any gaps in Geni using SmartCopy.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the suggestions. It looks like a MH Data Subscription is the way for me to go this year.

I'm probably 300 or so profiles away from completing my wife's side of the MAX Extended Family, then I plan to circle back into mine for lifecycle updates and further discoveries that MH may reveal. I only plan to go back 150 or so years, which gets me to a 2nd-great-grandparent/3rd cousin.

Agreed Erica, Ancestry is still the most comprehensive for USA, but FamilySearch fills in many of the gaps left by Ancestry. Well-written obituaries over the past 8 years (Legacy.com is fairly consistent since then for any funeral held in the USA) fill in even more.

So we shall see if the MH trees, especially those from South Carolina where formal records are often scanty, can suit my purpose.

Perhaps by next year at this time, my MAX Extended Family will be well enough developed that I can consider uploading its GEDCOM to MH.

Again many thanks!

Hi Gary, great job you are doing! Shana Tova!
You are second cousin twice removed of the wife of my husband's fourth cousin!
Every family needs its genealogist -I'm it on this branch!

Perhaps serendipitously, I received an email from BillionGraves that MyHeritage have arranged for a special offer of 50% off a PremiumPlus + Data Subscription for BillionGraves Friends (as am I) for one year, offer ending October 19.

Perhaps this is just what I was after. Certainly I will take advantage of the Data Subscription to improve my Geni tree as discussed earlier in this thread. Perhaps 11 months from now, I will have a substantially enhanced GEDCOM that I can then upload to MH.

Always mindful of the impact of recurring subscriptions (this is one of those, I carefully did read the Terms of Service), I can always scale back my membership to Data only should that behoove me to do so at renewal time.

Any thoughts on this offer?

It's a good offer -- I don't recall ever seeing a 50% discount.

I joined last night and am now in the MH fold. It was too good to pass up. Thanks Mike Stangel for your recommendation.

I'll try out the SmartMatching soon. I'm mindful that not all the trees on MH are well formed. But the Census and Public Records are incontrovertible and it looks very easy to do.
