Born in 1879. A talmid of R' Menachem Brody, Rav of Kaliv. He was the son-in-law of the Rav Ha-charif (literally, "sharp Rabbi") Rabbi David Hass (Haas? Hasz? Has?) the Shochet of Vizhali (somewhere in Hungary, haven't yet figured out exactly where).

After his marriage, he resided close to his in-laws and he studied by him the art of shechitah. He also studied among the shokhtim of Kosice (Kashau). In 1902, we found him practicing Shechita in Felsődobsza (is a village in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County in northeastern Hungary). What follows is a list of Shokhtim and Rabbanim who gave him their personal 'seal of approval' so to speak.

At some point in the early 1900's, he picked up and emigrated to America (Cleveland, Ohio) where he served as Shokhet. He emigrated along with his wife and children and there should be some record of this family in Ohio but I was unable to find a trace of them thus far. Your help would be appreciated.

I found a Ber Weisberger which may or may not be our "Chaim Ber".
In 1902, he is listed among a list of subscribers to the Sefer Imrei Yehuda published in Krakow by Leib Klein in that same year.

What is remarkable, if this is in fact him, is that he is listed as "Gaon Av Bes Din" which in essence means that he was the Rav of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aba%C3%BAj-Torna_County.
I've copied and pasted the relevant page here

I may have misread it and the ההגאב"ד is referring to someone else who is not listed by name.

Ilona Weszberger b. abt 1850 and Bertalan Weiszberger b abt. 1875 were from a family in Torna or Szendro. I have no father's names or other background on them. Could be part of your family. Ilona married Samuel Yeshoa Lichtman, son of Abraham Lichtman and Rosalia Slazinger. They raised 4 children there, all born in 1880's-1890's. I traced one daughter, Pepi, to Philadelphia. The other children are Juliana, Nandor and Fani. Not able to trace them, but I have not looked at Yad Vashem records for these Lichtmans.

probably not. I've just uncovered some new documents that show that my chaim ber and his father and some of his siblings were pure polish and not Hungarian at all. they were in Hungary illegally with false papers.

I’m Trying to catch up on the posts.
The distance from Krakov to Northern Hungary (Torna) was not far over the Carpathian Mountains. A several-days trip in summer by horse and buggy. Impossible in winter. After Miskolch, Krakov had opportunities for study and business. The mountain towns of Hungary were just outposts and farms.

Yes but they aren’t from Galicia either but rather from northern Poland (Masovian Vovoideship).
