Robert Anderson Ballard there could be a variety of reasons for what you see for the names of your matches.

You could join the R1b project at FTDNA and see which branch they predict you to be on and then there are a number of sub-projects from there...sometimes you can predict yourself by looking at your matches. Then you could test BigY to find your place on the tree and see which unique SNPs you have too: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/r-1b/about

Lois Lubin - Thank you. I have now done what you suggested, canceled the simple basic DNA results, which was already noted on my profile. Reconnecting from FamilyTreeDNA still doesn't go through, though. Nothing happens. It no longer asks to tick the override button, only the acceptance of Terms of Service box, which I do and then Authorize. Still it does not go through....
So now I have no DNA info attached to my Geni profile. What do you suggest?

Please either Tag me or at most type just my first name. Google finds hard-typed names. It does not find tagged names, tagged names change if one's Display name changes, and given my Privacy Settings, if someone not logged in looks, they see <Private User> not my name where I am tagged, So - at most, type my first name!

I do not recall ever seeing anything about an override button.

One can start logged out of FTDNA, logged in to Geni and follow directions on the profile's DNA Tab to connect the profile to FTDNA
or
One can start logged out of Geni, logged into FTDNA and connect to Geni

Which is the one you tried?

(Or was the problem that you were logged in to both when you started?)

I had the same experience FTDNA said I should try a different browser but that did not help. It is currently a bug.

Hi Lois, I was referred to you by a cousin. I am new to DNA. Had my brother take the FTDNA Y-37 test. I am having trouble uploading this to Geni. Would you be able to assist me when you have time? I have been doing genealogy since the 80's, but just got back into it after retiring. There has been so much technology added which I am not familiar. Much appreciate any help or referral to someone who can 'hold my hand'. LOL

Best regards,
Sandra Henderson Bell

Peter and Roderick both reported problems. I have no idea whether that has been fixed,

Is linking to FTDNA broken??

I just looked at my matches, ordered by most recent -- and most recent was 2/11/2021.

There is currently a problem with FTDNA sending the data to us. We are working with them to try to get it resolved.

Hoping it is resolved soon. I was so fortunate for my full sister to test and I have been trying to connect her DNA to Geni for two days...

Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 it has been down for just over a month now.

Mike is Geni's General Manager and programming genius. I was so hoping he would come and comment it was down because they were finally getting ready to implement being able to use DNA from other sites, not just FTDNA.
Got the first part of my wish - he came and commented. So at least now we know they are aware of the problem, but no it is not due to any change Geni is working to implement - and I see nothing in his comment that suggests he expects a speedy resolution - do you?

I am wondering if it has anything to do with FTDNA having recently merged with another company https://dna-explained.com/2021/01/07/mydna-merges-with-familytreedn...

It looks like the problem with FTDNA sending data must be a major issue - still no resolve:( I've been trying to connect for almost a month now. I hope they manage to fix it soon:)

Disappointingly frustrating

Question: Can someone ask this Geni user to fix their Y? It is attached to a man who died in 1911.
John Glen Patterson
Andrew Jackson Patterson
The Geni user may be inactive.

Or am I reading it incorrectly?

John Foster . Two Y's. One is wrong. Why am I NOT able to track down the R1b? Privacy of the Geni user, I get, but this is an issue

Are R1b1a2a1a1b and R-FT82234 and R-Y94955 within the same branch? Meaning is one just a more advanced as in the Y12 vs the Y111 vs the Big Y?

I know:
Y12, Y37, Y67, Y111 all test STRs.
Big Y, SNP Packs, Y700 all test SNPs.
Those three are three different terminal SNPs - or suggested terminal SNPs.
Beyond that, someone more knowledgeable is needed.

Private User, shouldn't two men who tested what Geni is showing as Y111 have the exact same Y Haplo showing?

Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 -
I have watched the reported Haplogroup of one of the Kits I manage change as a result of FTDNA policy - if I understand correctly, from the base Haplogroup to a guess based on folks who match them and had done SNP testing and then back to base Haplogroup as FTDNA decided not to guess beyond base haplogroup.
So if that person uploaded to two versions of his profile, the results would not match.

The haplogroups listed do not look like a base haplogroup to me -- which would mean they are a result of SNP testing, not what level STR testing was done.. Could have been one SNP pack or another SNP pack or an individual SNP test or another.
I am thinking if they did one of the BigYs, that would have been listed - quite sure SNP packs or individual SNP tests are not.
Moreover, mutations do happen, so even if all three are descendants of the same ancestor and tested the exact same set of SNPs it is totally possible the results will not be identical.
Very likely, as I understand it, that 4th cousins will not be exactly the same - that is why they include as matches on the STR tests - Y37 think up to four steps different, not just exact -- Y67, think up to 7,, and not sure how many mutations accepted as match in Y111.

I have one second cousin with same direct paternal great grandfather as my father. I talked him into letting me buy a FF and Y67 for him several years ago, promised I would not update without his permission. Asked as they offered SNP packs that would not even have required any more sample and he always said no. Now would like a Y700 - which would update his STRs to 111 and test a whole lot (700?) SNPs - which from what I have read, FDTNA would probably want a new sample for - if he is not willing to okay a test that only requires him to say ok, how likely is it he will ok a test requiring a new sample? Fear he will say No and stop talking to me; trying to figure out how to convince him or at least ask without pissing him off. But I keep reading about Y, trying to understand about the topic.

Misspoke - he and I have same greatgrandfather - who would be my father's paternal grandfather. (Also his father's paternal grandfather)

And when I said "So if that person uploaded to two versions of his profile, the results would not match." Meant if uploaded at different times in that policy.

Private User, I have been doing genealogy a long time. I met a fellow Hicks researcher many years ago online and he did a Y as soon as it became available. He later did 23&me. Those Y haplos appear differently but I became aware that the way the Y Haplo is labeled is changed... I likened it in my mind to when they changed they changed hurricane and storm ratings.
My uncle did 23&me. His mtio is a number different from mine which is so odd but ok, lol
I attempted to purchase a Y for him with FtDNA and they say can only do with a fresh sample and not from raw DNA which has been transferred.
They allowed me to use the kit for someone else and I bought the smallest/first step Y available because there was a sale and I will never be able to retest my uncle anywhere.
Time... and opportunity. All limited.

I say that if I had a Y, I would probably be better able to get a grip on it...
I am not a fast learner but I am smart lol
I just wish there was more support/customer support for the DNA side of genealogy here... the fact that so many folks have attached/connected their DNA to the wrong profile or the fact that some folks have tested at various levels or times/dates make it more and more important for there to be someone who can fix these issues as they are identified.

I agree, Cynthia. Wish there was more support for the DNA side of genealogy here.

That's it. April 2020, I have received nothing regarding my FTDNA KIT 276195, account 53733601, due to the termination of the activities of hte old email provider. So, I nedd to change my old email adress dvpinto@brturbo.com.br and start to use the new one: dvp1936@gmail.com after chabging the email address and ID 1055899381/080402gap. Please, H E L P !!!!

Anymore ability to upload FTDNA or anything? Just checking as it seems like it is dragging on.

I am still waiting to add my sister.

I have a 90 year old cousin who came back to Geni to attach his DNA and he is still waiting too... :/

Susanne Floyd and Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 - Totally agree with you.
However, just a reminder that Geni has never provided any matches you did not already have at FTDNA. So you may just want to do work looking at matches there and then searching on Geni.
Also, In my experience, FTDNA's estimates for relationship were generally better.

The number of my autosomal matches at Geni is slowly going down. Wonder what algorithm the program is using that it keeps churning out weekly email announcements of new DNA matches (always 5) when there have not actually been any new matches in over 3 months

Mike Stangel - It has been over two months since your last comment - any update?

Geni gives clues and has tools that are most helpful. It isn't always just about the DNA matches showing but also the info that can be gained just the same as why one would test in more than one place.

Cynthia -

1) I test in more than one place to find more matches.
2) re:"Geni gives clues and has tools that are most helpful" - that is why I suggested "and then searching on Geni" - even if the profile is private, Geni will let you know if it is a match to the name you entered. And any restrictions you next enter such as name of parent and/or spouse and/or sibling, etc. (I never use dates or locations - they used to not work, feel free to try but do not assume they will work - also less likely to be entered). And Ancestry Report (and Descendant Report) are there and work fine even for Private profiles you cannot access - so if a person has a Tree on FTDNA, you will probably be able to tell if you have found them on Geni.

Private User I do this already.
Perhaps I did not word it well enough for you to understand but every place one can upload or connect their DNA has different tools to help the user figure out their relationship
