A while back, at the National Archive Kew, London, I photographed the complete " British German Legion - Military Settlers at the Cape of Good Hope - Nominal roll of Officers NCOs and Men embarked on the Abyssinian, Covenanter, Culloden, Mersey, Stamboul, Sultana & Vulcan 9-24 Nov 1856.

If this is of any interest, please let me know

Hi Richard,
After the Crimean War some of the soldiers of the British German Legion Lord Panmure in consultation with Sir George Grey recruited soldiers to settle in South Africa in what is now the Eastern Cape around East London and was known as British Kaffraria.
A history of these as well as subsequent recruitment of German Families to emegrate is well described in the book 'Germans in Kaffraria - 1858 to 1958' by J F Schwar and B E Pape published by Robprint Pinetown South Africa

Your offer will assist many who are capturing German Families and I would be pleased to receive copies of your images and have appended my private e-mail below - thanks in anticipation

Hi Richard

It is also a topic of much interest to me personally, and if I may be so bold as to ask for copies too, it would be wonderful. I am at jnconradie@gmail.com

Sincerely appreciated.

Kind regards

Nico

That is very interesting Richard and John, I have Pape's in my tree on my mothers side, something to follow up on.

Regards,
Shane.

Richard Allan Beeby Thank you.

Hi Richard, I'm very keen to get copies as well, unfortunately the link no longer is live. How can I get copies? My email is christine.goddard@yahoo.co.uk

Here is an online copy of "Germans in Kaffraria - 1858 to 1958":

Thanks very much Nico. My Gr Grandfather Johann Maxmillian Schlachter was on the Covenanter. I'm loving this history of Germans in Kaffraria.

All links to these lists of Legionnaires seem to be broken. Does anyone have any other links?

Hi thanks for initially making this information available.

I was wondering if there are any active links to the nominal rolls for the British German Legion?

Thanks

I was hitting a brick wall trying to confirm who my 2XGr-grandfather was so I contacted the National Archives in Kew. Much of the information on the British German Legion has not been digitised so I had to pay a small fee and complete a search for names online. They found 15 documents - some quarterly payslips from Thorncliffe Camp, Aldershott, Kulali Turkey and Colechester as well as Muster rolls with his name on them.
It seems that our relative took a job with the constabulary and as a result his pay was reduced,
