Hello,

I am wanting to see better proof of who Rachel Smith's line is descended from.

I am wanting to compare the works of the following webpages:

http://www.angelfire.com/trek/smyth/Smyth/Tom12.html <-They claim a papertrail link to Hans J Smidt

http://www.smithsworldwide.org/tng/getperson.php?personID=I23625&am... <- They claim yDNA link to Hans J Smidt

There's more that I need to organize. Essentially, I'm looking in both Russell Co, VA and Hillsborough, Orange Co, NC and running into this Hans J Smidt line in both places. I feel something isn't solid with the research, but I could be wrong.

I'll be adding more details tomorrow.

Chris Smith

Hey Erica (or anyone else interested...)

I'm going through my AncestryDNA matche tonight and I'm finding some really interesting info regarding my Smith group and the Hatfields. Would you like to look over the info?

Sure, just remember I'm not that great with DNA.

However I do have a line to her cousin

Rachel E. (Smith) Hatfield is your first cousin five times removed's wife's grandmother

https://www.geni.com/path/Erica-Howton+is+related+to+Rachel-Hatfiel...

It won't help with her origins but there should be Phillips & Sexton matches.

Yes, I'm seeing Sexton ancestors in a few of my close Smith linked AncestryDNA matches.

Right now, some very statistically significant looking matches have me looking at the family of an Elizabeth Reynolds Lloyd. I'm trying to see if her mother was really a Mary (Polly or A) Smith who married a John G Reynolds. Looks like maybe Whitley or Adair Co, KY? Elizabeth Reynolds Lloyd would have been a mother-in-law to a Parzida Hatfield, a granddaughter of Joseph Hatfield.

Online, the Hatfields are associated with the line of Hans J Smidt from Delacarlia, Falun, Sweden. Sometimes, people throw in the middle name of George. They all say it's well documented with family bibles and stuff, but I dunno. I know this Smidt line and my Smith line are not the same. The SmithsWorldWide.org project has a Hans J Smidt line represented. They are Hg-I. I am Hg-R.

When researching my Smiths in Orange Co, NC, I know we had a Bennett Smith living there around 1810-1820 or so. He was from "Southern District". For a reason, I believe my Smiths were from the Haw River area of Orange Co, NC some time ago. Today, it is the area known as Alamance Co, NC.

Here is a pretty decent source for the Stalcop family linked to Hans J Smidt.

Here's a messy page (from about 1990 it looks like) that links Joseph Hatifled and an Ericus Smith.

There is an Andreas Smidt that, I believe, is incorrectly referred to as Andrew Smith in some web pages.

When I research my Smiths in Kentucky, I find that a General William Smith was born in Glade Hollow, Russell Co, VA. My paper trail links my immediate line to an Andrew Smith who was a likely brother of this General William Smith, but I have found that most online sources say that the Andrew Smith from Russell Co, VA around 1765 or so was the one that married Rachel Hatfield. So, I'm trying to sort that out.

I also know that my Smiths had an "Elisha" Smith in the group. He may have been referred to as "Eli" in some cases, but I'm not sure. There is an "Eli Smith" associated with the Andrew Smith of Russell Co, VA who was related to Ephraim Hatfield.

Tonight, I've done some meticulous organizing of my AncestryDNA matches and have once again come across the Hatfields. I need help sorting it out. Thanks.

Chris

Also, just for reference, I have a statistically significant DNA match with a descendant of James Sexton and Tamara Leacy Jeffers. Is this family in your tree?

Erica, how certain are you about Rachel E. Smith having been born in Isle of Wight Co, VA? This is exactly where I was expecting to find my Smiths at some point.

I think Jeffers & Sexton must be fairly close to me. All kinds of Lawsons on this list, and I'm a Lawson out of Clinton County KY & I believe Scott County TN before.

As to where Rachel Smith was born, I don't know if we'll get better than what's noted here:

Sister--Mary Smith (25 Nov 1754 Delaware-bef 1820 Virginia) married Ephraim Hatfield & were great-grandparents of Devil Anse Hatfield. There is a debate on whether Mary or Rachel was born first. Mary's birth & Baptism are recorded in Old Swede's Church, Wilmington Delaware. All other children's births/baptisms, including Rachel's, are not meaning they were were probably all born in Virginia.

Names for Rachel's grand father

Hans Georg Smitt, aka Johan Jürgen Smidt/Schmidt, aka Hans George Smith.

Yeah, that info doesn't have any sources... Maybe look at the Old Swede's Church records? I don't know how they made the jump from records in DE to Isle of Wight, VA.

Somewhere in Virginia.:(

Rachel Smith and Joseph Hatfield are related to me via my Aunt Nancy Lavina Hatfield (Cox). She married Hiram Big Hi Hatfield, son of Reuben Hatfield son of Joseph and Rachel. Nancy and Hiram had 10 children all Hatfield’s of course. They lived in Iowa and I believe Hiram was born in a Tennessee. Nancy was born via Sarah Sally Cox (West) and Alexander Cox in Jackson, Indiana. I have more on Ancestry.com AWray Family Tree. Anitawray52. Tree: AWray family tree. I have Joseph and Rachel. Anita AWray

Also info on Wray-Cooper great&grand. Smaller tree. AWray52
