Hi,

I need help with places of birth and ancestors for my great great grandfather George, born in 1847, married to a Hannah Smith, born Brooks. Also his father Henry born in 1813 married to Sarah born in 1821, his father John born unknown married to. Mary. Most of what we have is my great great grandfather George being in Lancashire. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if you have a shared tree or family that would be amazing.

Just walking it through for myself:

I can get George's son John's marriage in the US:

And I get them in the US census which shows George and Hannah were born in England while Hannah's father was from Ireland and George's birth is estimated at 1846

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VT84-BRJ

And this is John's birth registration:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2X7D-4LV

This is George and Hannah's marriage (his estimated date of birth is 1844 though):

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNMH-6C6

And the registration:

So it looks like they were married and moved to the US between the UK censuses, which makes life tricky.

On Family Search a tree gives this as him in the 1851 census, but the estimated date of birth is 1840, but if right that gives everyone's birth locations (although Rickental seems like a typo - Rawtenstall? 1871 census suggests it is Bickerstaffe):

This is that Henry and Sarah in 1871:

Have you got his wedding certificate? You could then doublecheck the father's occupation against the census.

I suspect the birth estimates being all over the place is making it difficult to pin down his birth registration and christening (although nothing on the latter crops up with a broad search).

If all else fails I'd ask for help here - they've helped me out with brick walls I've had:

Thank you for that. I talked to someone in Lancashire Parish and they stated that it is most definitely Bickerstaffe. Though they would like to help further, it could be a year or more before they get those records transcribed.

Ah that is a little frustrating but the hook is in the water. However, even though the range of possible dates of birth is wide, it should be possible to find the birth registration, although it may involve a couple of stabs in the dark (I've got a handful of birth certificates from similar guesswork that are not right).

To keep things joined up here is the thread on Roots Chat:

Looks like things are moving on a bit.

I appreciate all the help. Its hard doing all this. Im glad I got leads to help me down the right path.

Yeah, the Roots Chat folks have really helped me out in the past.

As you now seem to have John and Mary Owen's dates of death you should be able to take a shot at finding their death certificates - the GRO now offer a research option so you can get a cheaper scan of birth and death certificates sent to you.

Actually you can't get John's as it is before September 1837.

It is likely that this is Mary:

Yes, the GRO now offers more information like age at their death and they give us:

-
OWEN, MARY 67
GRO Reference: 1839 D Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 20 Page 327

Awesome
, do you think if I can get both the birth and death dates I will be able to get further.

I dont have the birth dates or death dates at all, just the info you have provided me.

Before September 1837 you are usually going to get the death dates from gravestones, wills and the like. Birth dates are only ever going to be an estimate as you'll be using baptismal dates.

Once you get the various certificates and census returns to ensure you've got a solid base to build on, you can then push back through the parish records which are, fortunately, more easily available.

And if anyone is following this, the George Owen mentioned in the first post is:

George Owen

Thanks Bill. I believe Bickerstaffe is still trying to get those records available.

I'd imagine that they are available on Ancestry and/or Find My Past

Ohh, I dont have a membership with any of those.

I don't know what the situation is like where you are but (after exhausting the free introductory subscription) I use the libraries to get access to them.

I will try find my past and see what I can find out. Thanks Bill
