Sigurd Ring (Old Norse: Sigurðr hringr) or Ring (Old Norse: Hringr) (ca 750) was a Swedish and Danish king mentioned in many old Scandinavian legends. According to Bósa saga ok Herrauds, there was once a saga on Sigurd Ring, but this saga is now lost. In the old sources, he is notable for winning the Battle of the Brávellir against Harald Wartooth and for being the father of Ragnar Lodbrok.

In Sögubrot af nokkrum fornkonungum, Sigurd is the paternal nephew of the Danish king Harald Wartooth, and presumably (the part of Sögubrot where this would have been narrated expressly has not been preserved) the son of Randver, who in his turn is the son of Harald's mother Auðr the Deep-Minded and her husband king Raðbarðr of Gardariki. Harald Wartooth was beginning to feel old he made Ring the king of Sweden and Västergötland. Ring beat his uncle at the colossal Battle of Bråvalla, and became the ruler of Denmark as well. He made a shieldmaiden the ruler of Denmark (cf. Chronicon Lethrense, below).

Sigurd married Alfhild, the daughter of king Alf of Alfheim. Together with Alfhild, he had the son Ragnar Lodbrok.

As Sigurd grew old, distant parts of his realm began to secede, and it is told how he lost England due to old age. One day, he was in Västergötland and was visited by his brothers-in-law, the sons of Gandalf. They asked him to join them in attacking king Eysteinn of Westfold in Norway. In Westfold, there were great blóts held at Skiringssal. Unfortunately, Sögubrot (meaning the "fragment") ends there. However, the Skjöldunga saga is believed to be the original story on which Sögubrot is based and it continues the story (see below).

The Skjöldunga saga tells that Sigurd Ring was married to Alfhild, the daughter of king Alf of Alfheim, and their son was Ragnar Lodbrok. Unfortunately, Alfhild died. When Sigurd Ring was an old man, he came to Skiringssal to take part in the great blóts. There he spotted a very beautiful girl named Alfsol, and she was the daughter of King Alf of Vendel (Vendsyssel). The girl's two brothers refused to allow Sigurd to marry her. Sigurd fought with the brothers and killed them, but their sister had been given poison by her brothers so that Sigurd could never have her. When her corpse was carried to Sigurd, he went aboard a large ship where he placed Alvsol and her brothers. Then, he steered the ship with full sails out on the sea, as the ship burnt.

Ragnar Lodbrok succeeded his father, but put a subking on the throne of Sweden, king Eysteinn Beli, who later was killed by Ragnar's sons.

General Notes:

Sigurðr hringr, Sigurd Ring (ca 750) was a Swedish king mentioned in sources such as the Heimskringla, Gesta Danorum, Hervarar Saga and Sögubrot af Nokkrum. He is of disputed historicity.

He was the nephew of the Danish king Harald Hildetand who put him on the Swedish throne. He beat his uncle at the colossal Battle of Bråvalla, and became the ruler of Denmark as well.

He ruled until he became very old. Then he fell in love with a beautiful girl, Alvsol of Vendsyssel, but was not allowed to marry her. Sigurd attacked Alvsol's brothers, but was mortally wounded during the battle. Alvsol had already died of poison so as not to be taken by Sigurd.

Sigurd had the girl and her brothers put on a ship which he steered out to the sea as the ship burnt.

He was the father of Ragnar Lodbrok.

From Heimskringla, Harald Harfager's Saga:

"14. HARALD AND THE SWEDISH KING EIRIK.

King Harald came with his fleet eastward to Viken and landed at Tunsberg, which was then a trading town. He had then been four years in Throndhjem, and in all that time had not been in Viken. Here he heard the news that Eirik Eymundson, king of Sweden, had laid under him Vermaland, and was taking scat or land-tax from all the forest settlers; and also that he called the whole country north to Svinasund, and west along the sea, West Gautland; and which altogether he reckoned to his kingdom, and took land-tax from it. Over this country he had set an earl, by name Hrane Gauzke, who had the earldom between Svinasund and the Gaut river, and was a mighty earl. And it was told to King Harald that the Swedish king said he would not rest until he had as great a kingdom in Viken as Sigurd Hring, or his son Ragnar Lodbrok, had possessed; and that was Raumarike and Vestfold, all the way to the isle Grenmar, and also Vingulmark, and all that lay south of it. In all these districts many chiefs, and many other people, had given obedience to the Swedish king. King Harald was very angry at this, and summoned the bondes to a Thing at Fold, where he laid an accusation against them for treason towards him. Some bondes defended themselves from the accusation, some paid fines, some were punished. He went thus through the whole district during the summer, and in harvest he did the same in Raumarike, and laid the two districts under his power. Towards winter he heard that Eirik king of Sweden was, with his court, going about in Vermaland in guest-quarters." 3

-------------------
Challenged his uncle Harald Hilditonn or Wartooth. Early sources are almost unanimous in describing Sigurd Hring as Harald's nephew; but thereafter a tangle of witness makes him a sub-king in Denmark, in Sweden, in East Gautland, or in Sweden and East Gautland together. The first of these appears the least likely. If Hring existed at all, he existed east of the Oresund. The rivalry of Harald and Hring led to the battle of Bravellir, a clash as famous in northern story as Hrolf's last stand at Lejre, and equally embellished with fictions. Harald came to earn the dislike of his subjects for old age and cruelty, and they planned to get rid of him by some ignoble stratagem. He preferred to die in battle and sent a challenge to King Hring. Each monarch collected a great host, with champions drawn from every northern nation. The armies came formally to the place of slaughter, probably near Braviken, north of modern Norrkoping, on the NE boundary of East Gautland. Here they were drawn up in battle order and harangued by Harald and Hring. Then the trumpets sounded and the carnage began. When it was over, only Harald was dead, tumbled from his chariot and clubbed to death by Odinn, who thus gathered him to his peers in Valhalla. Hring treated his uncle's corpse with Honour; according to Icelandic sources he was conveyed in his chariot into a cairn filled with the donated treasures of the victors; according to Saxo he was burned on a sumptuous pyre. So ended the Bravic War. [A History of the Vikings, pp. 53-4]
