Was Rutha a Native American?

There's absolutely nothing to suggest that she was. The Native Americans who lived in the area had been driven out of what became Stokes County in the early 1700's. Intermarriage between whites and non-whites was against the law in North Carolina, yet Rutha and John had a legal marriage with a marriage bond. There are several Hill families in Stokes County on the 1830 census with daughters Rutha's age; all are listed as white.
