Hello!

I was wondering where the ancestry for Angus MacLeod came from. Everywhere I have looked, Angus' father is John Uallach Mcleod, not Roderick, and that appears to be all that is known.

Sincerely,
Tamas

Here's one....

You changed his name from Rory to Roderick.

Roderick "Old Ruari" MacLeod, 10th of Lewis

Why?

•John, who died before his father, having been killed near Stornoway by his bastard uncle, Rory Og

It will have been observed that Old Roderick, the date of whose death we are unable positively to fix, had also five bastard sons — Torquil Uigeach, Murdoch, Neil, Donald, and Rory Og, all of whom, and their sons, took a leading part in the final struggle of the Macleods to maintain their ancient rights to the great Island principality of the Lewis."

The MacLeods, like everyone else from the Isle of Lewis, were Gàidhlig speakers. "Rory" is an Anglicization of Ruairidh, and "Roderick" is an Anglicization of Ruairidh Oig. Nobody on Lewis would've actually used "Rory" or "Roderick"; only Anglophone writers would.

If you're going to work in the Hebridean branches, I'd encourage you to familiarize yourself with Gàidhlig naming conventions the way that Tamás has. It's essential.

Here's an intro: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Gaelic_name

You'll see why Mary Anne Trump is only "Mary Anne MacLeod" in English, after being born and raised as Màiri Anna NicLeòid.

I am afraid that my knowledge of Gaelic naming practices is also lacking. I only changed the name to be inline with the family tree on macleodgenealogy.com, as I expect that they know more about Gaelic names than I do: http://www.macleodgenealogy.com/ACMS/D0028/I8592.html

In addition, Old Rory, was the nickname of Roderick "Old Ruari" MacLeod, 10th of Lewis's father, Roderick "Old Ruari" MacLeod, 10th of Lewis and so I assumed that the name for Roderick Jr of Rory "Og" Macleod of Lewes (aka Old Rory) might be a mistake and would cause confusion.

Well, it doesn't sound like John Bayne and James Kar were the best of buddies. I am trying to determine if their profiles are on geni.... do you know? I did update my 10th great grandfather's profile which I got from ancestry, if you want to look....

John Bane
