Sarah Fletcher Mendenhall IS NOT MARRIED TO THE WILLIAM BUIS/BOICE [& etc. alternate spellings]. 1740 [really 1742]-1800 William & family were in South Carolina at 1790 census time at the same time 1740-1822 William & his wife Elizabeth were in Vermont census. It is known from 1800 South Carolina Will of 1740-1800 William that he had only 1 daughter, & 8 sons, while 1740-1822 William & Elizabeth had 6 sons, 2 daughters.
1742-1800 William by 1799 had amassed 1000 acres of land in South Carolina, which he left, by will, to wife Sarah as long as she remained a widow. If she married, land was to go sons. 1742-1800 William & Sarah's daughter, Lida, was incompetent. Being no fool, Sarah remained a widow until her death in 1832. At her death, son Abraham files a "writ of partition" or final estate settlement happened. By 1832, 1742 Wm. & Sarah's son John, by 1832 estate settlement who had removed to Georgia is dead, leaving 6 children who are named & these children get their father's share of estate. 1741-1800 William & Sarah's son, Elisha had removed to Tennessee by 1832 & also is dead & left children who are minors, but are not named. 1742-1800 William & Sarah's son Abraham asks the courts permission to sell some property to fund care of [sister] Lida. Professional genealogists have listed 1742 William as a son of Johannes Buis [+ alternate spellings] who md. Maritie Brouwer-Johannes Buis s/o Jan Buys & Elizabeth deGroot-Jan Cornelis Buys & Ida Lubbertse.
1740-1822 William has a church recorded baptism naming parents as Peter Buys & Rachel Ostrander. 1740-1822 married in 1764 to Elizabeth Snyder/Snider, & the births of their children begin in 1766. 1740-1822 William in 1790 is living in Bennington Vermont & is listed on Vermont census. In 1792 William & Elizabeth decide to move to Upper Canada [Ontario] as the gov't was offering FREE land to settlers meeting certain conditions. To move into Upper Canada, permission had to be granted to the potential resident & to get the FREE land, one had to be +14 y/o. William, wife Elizabeth, sons Abraham & Benjamin, daughters Rachel & Leney write the Canada gov't asking permission to move into Canada, and for their "FREE" land [like homesteading in Western US]. The 1740-1822 William "Boice" family do move to Upper Canada and the family names begin appearing on early records of the time period. Son Benjamin married in Canada church in 1798, his brother also named William in 1804 and their son Abraham makes a 2nd marriage in 1817 & 1783-1851 William & 1774-1850 Benjamin are listed on 1819 Loughborough Township, Frontenac,UC census [only those residents less than 60 y/o were to be enumerated]. 1740-1822 William, s/o Peter & Rachel, is dead by 8/1822 as "widow Elizabeth Boice, age 73 of Loughborough [marries] to John Holmes, age 81 of Kingston".
