Brother: John Ashley 1625-1671

Hi Cynthia, I have been looking for the parentage of Robert Ashley also. I think that the last data that I found was a Robert Ashley born in Much Wemlock in 1620. William Ashley was born in Much Wemlock also in approx. 1593. I don't know if the Much Wemlock Robert is our Robert. Also in the Ashley Genealogy by Francis Bacon Trowbridge (1896) says that our Ashley family was using the coat of arms of The Ashley Family of Lowesby , Leistershire. I know that there is a connection with the Horton family of Mowlesby, Leistershire also and Elizabeth Schyler from Mowlsby might be Robert Ashley's mother. Elizabeth Schyler married a Horton - maybe her second husband after William Ashley? I believe that Robert Ashley came to Massachusetts with the Horton family( Probably?). The only possible Robert born in Leistershire was a Robert Astley. I would like to find out if a William Ashley was the father of Robert Ashley of Springfield and Who William's father was. Thanks for starting the Discussion, Tom

This might be a really dumb question, but why in the world would anyone think an emigrant to the Virginia Colony is related to an emigrant to the Massachusetts Bay Colony?

As far as I know there are exactly three men in history who lived both places:

- Hopkins of the Sea Venture & the Mayflower
- Allerton of the Mayflower
- Daniel Gookins

So that leaves around 20,000 emigrants to New England and 70,000 emigrants to Virginia & Maryland with no known relationship.

These two groups might as well have landed from different planets, they were so different...

NB! Plenty of exceptions to prove the rule. But the rule should be - same name, different locations, they are different families.

Thomas Anthony Heit, UE A Leicestershire origin is in the right ball park, definitely worth exploring.

Mary Ashley’s first husband was Thomas Horton, of Mowsley & Springfield & he’s from Mowbry.

(Mowsley, that is)

I do not understand the meaning of NB
I am self taught on many things and have not come across this one yet but I only recently figured out MP means Member if Parliament and AFK is “away from keyboard”
I am very interested in any siblings for Ashley especially if we cannot confirm parents at this time because I am finding a lot of DNA matches and needing to figure out the relationships

Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 you would need Anthony’s help for substantial research into English records. It’s not a fast or easy project, or there would not the controversy mentioned in the project overview.

It is highly unlikely he had siblings in Virginia.

Ok. No siblings for now.

This scenario is plausible:

“Elizabeth Schyler from Mowlsby might be Robert Ashley's mother. Elizabeth Schyler married a Horton - maybe her second husband after William Ashley? I believe that Robert Ashley came to Massachusetts with the Horton family( Probably?)”

—-

Unfortunately I think there aren’t yet found records?

Part of why it’s plausible is that it fits a common pattern of the era: young widow with child/ren remarried, all emigrate. Sometimes the widow didn’t survive but the child stays with the step family.

If Robert came as a youngster, which is implied, and with the Horton’s - no known siblings. Or we would know about them. Perhaps plenty of step siblings.

NB = note bene, “take due notice.” Meaning, it’s not gospel, plenty of exceptions.

Hi Cynthia, I have done DNA tests with Family Tree DNA and My Heritage DNA. I have done the Autosomal tests with Both, and the Y-DNA and Mitochondral with Family Tree. My Y-DNA Haplogroup is R1B 1C2 etc. and RM343, RM 269 narrowed down to RL2. Tom

Thomas Anthony Heit, UE is there an Ashley DNA group somewhere? I do not have anyone who is a Y and I am a bit far for the autosomal comparisons. I have two males back to back so X is not doable for me but I am always searching out a common SNP and DNA confirmation where I can. Ten gens is pretty much the max without a mitochondrial or a Y line to the subject.

Hi Cynthia, I wish that my mothers brother, my uncle Tom was still here -He died in 1998. He would have Robert's Y DNA. My great great grandfather, Thomas Williams Ashley and his brother came to Iowa together in 1854. His brothers name was Joshua Crosby Ashley. His great great great grandson is renting my farm in Deerfield Township, Chickasaw Co., Iowa. I already asked him to do a test, but he didn't want to at this time. I'll check around and see if any other direct descendant of Roberts with the Ashley Surname have taken a Y-DNA test. Tom

Hi Cynthia, There is an Ashley Y-DNA group at Family tree DNA. Just Google Ashley Y- DNA. There were results for William Hassel Ashley's descendant, and one descended from a Joseph Ashley from Massachusetts (RM269). I'll keep looking for more info, Tom

Excellent. Thank you Thomas Anthony Heit, UE

Hi Cynthia, I found that Lowesby, Leistershire had about 12 families in the 1200's and 1300's but had only one family by 1550 The Ashby Family. The Coat of Arms that The Ashley Family of Massachusetts used from 1796 to the time of printing of The Ashley Genealogy by Francis Bacon Trowbridge was The Ashley family of Lowesby, Leistershire. Then there is the Robert Astly born in Leistershire. How to come to a conclusion about Robert Ashley's parentage is the question I can't answer yet. There is evidence. I feel that there is definitely a connection with the Horton family and perhaps Elizabeth Schyler as a possible mother. Even the Robert Ashley born in Much Wemlock in 1620 might still be a possible Robert Ashley of Springfield. We will have to keep searching, Tom
