I need help with identifying the four Lewis males listed on the 1780 Dobbs County, NC Tax List for District #10 Granger.

10GRANGERGreene County -From Snow Hill to south as far as Wheat Swamp, including Hookerton vicinity, and westward to include Arba.

They are:

DIST/PayeeFIRSTLAST NAME VALUE

10 52 JacobLewis400
10 53 JamesLewis400
10 54 StephenLewis400
10 55 WilliamLewis400

In the 1769 Census for Dobbs County there is an Anthony Lewis and Jacob Lewis is identified as the son of Stephen Lewis. James Lewis is on the 1769 Tax List, but Stephen and William are not listed (other than Jacob being listed as the son of Stephen Lewis. There are no Lewis males on the 1782 Dobbs Tax List.

Has anyone identified which Lewis family these people belong to, or their relationship to each other, or does anyone have any information on the land that they owned?

William Lewis was born in the Contentnea community in 1761. Contentnea is located along Contentnea Creek, not far from its confluence with Lewis Branch Run. This area is about three miles northwest of Snow Hill. At the time of William's birth this area was part of Dobbs County. Contentnea became a part of Glasgow County in 1791. Glasgow County was re-named Greene County in 1799.

There are some 1770 land records which mention property owned byWilliam Lewis and Jacob Lewis in surveys for John Heartsfield and George Bell which mention Wheat Swamp. Wheat Swamp is located about 12 miles downstream from the Contentnea community.

Has anyone traced their ancestry to any one of the following Lewis males on the 1780 tax list: Jacob, James, Stephen, or William Lewis?

Thanks for your help.
