I hadn't really identified any Melungeon ancestry but had recently submitted my DNA for the DNA Consultants' Native American FIngerprint Plus test which covers a lot more than just Native American. I got my results back last night and was surprised to see Mulungeon in my results. Unless that comes from a line of Redbone ancestry I only recently discovered, I have no idea who the ancestors this DNA came from were. I'm impressed they pinpointed it to Tennessee in my results!

My Summary states:

"...There is also Melungeon (7, megapopulations #2, map - green diamond in Tennessee)..."

I will have to determine if the Redbone line is the same as Mulungeon. It's all new to me that they're in my lines. There could be more than one line for me to discover, for all I know at this point.

So, I'm now following this group and just giving a shout out to any yet-to-be-discovered Mulungeon kinfolk!

Debbie

Welcome cousin...I too am melungeon 😍

Debbie Gambrell I did our paints...I saw our mixes😁

Oh! I need to do Paint! Thanks for making me think of that!

Polly GEDmatch kit # TA7057982, I 'think' we have a closer common ancestor than Geni shows at present, because it shows us as 10th cousins once removed by gedmatch shows our MRCA @ 7.1 generations.

On the pathway showing on Geni, our common line is Coleman. I hope you can shed some light on that line for me. Years ago someone told me there is Lumbee in our Coleman lines . I have never found any Native American in the lines. I more recently read that Lumbee can be / are related to Mulungeon lines.

Prior to having the recent DNA test showing my Mulungeon DNA, I had just recently come across old research online done by Steven Pony Hill that was about Redbone indians and Romany / Gypsies. He had a surname listed among the Redbone migrants - Fennell, one of my direct lines. I looked into it and the Dempsey Fennell he had listed as Redbone was the nephew of my direct ancestor. So I had only just discovered all this when I got results back showing me with Mulungeon DNA. This tied together with the Romany research I'd been doing as my recent results also showed Romani / Gypsy DNA.

So I don't know if I have one Mulungeon line (the Fennell Redbone line) or more than just that one. Do you know of any proven Native American in our Coleman lines, such as Lumbee in particular? I'm wondering if we share Mulungeon ancestry or are just related some other way.

The more answers I find, it seems I always have new questions! lol

Debbie Gambrell I'm looking at our paints by chromosome and I think I remember a few leads on Coleman...I'll look

Great. Keep me posted!

Debbie Gambrell how expensive is that test?

It's the most expensive one I've done, but considering the results I got, I don't regret that I indulged myself and had it done. It was about $280 for that one. They have other less expensive ones, but I wanted to do the full one and be done with it. I know a few folks who did the lesser expensive one and are now paying to upgrade their results to the full one. I figured I'd end up doing the same thing if I didn't just go ahead and get the Plus. I don't know that the other ones show Melungeon or if that just shows in the Plus test.

Debbie Gambrell that's cool!! I'll just compare our paints lol

Debbie Gambrell I found some Redmon in-laws in my tree😁

My 3rd great-aunt Alsey Ainsworth married a Choctaw Redman, so it's her descendants I'm related to that way.
