James' father John was a chain carrier for Charles McDowell at Quaker Meadows NC in summer of 1779. The family travelled down the Mississippi River in summer of 1781 after living in Washington County NC (Nashville Tenn). Most likely James was born in Burke County NC sometime in 1779.
