Not the son of George Perkins

George Perkins, son of Joshua “Old Jock” Perkins & Mary, married Keziah Manning. Per his Rev War pension, their only child was Anna (Perkins) Graves.

Ref: DAR Ancestor #: A088771

Faustine Darsey on partial hiatus Can you double check I interpreted correctly?

Here’s Stephen Perkins listed as a son of George & who predeceased him, which explains why he’s not in the Pension records, perhaps.

Article on George Perkins Memorial w/photo states that George had two children: Anna and Steven Graves . "They raised a son Stephan and daughter Anna from which came a line of 500 descendants."

I have DAR membership through this Stephen Perkins, son of Patriot George Perkins. He is accepted as the son of George by DAR - my membership was approved in 2021, so this is not old news. Neither of George's children were listed in his original pension application. On 28 Jan 1853 in Lewis County MO, Anna Graves, 72, assigned power of attorney to obtain her mother’s pension, and that is the document in which it is asserted Anna was George and Keziah's only child. This was true in 1853 because George and Keziah's son Stephen had died in 1850.

To me, it looks like DAR has “corrected / removed” Stephen Perkins from their listing as son of George and Keziah based on the rev war pension document only - not any other reason.

Private User I think we should re connect. This is not a good enough reason; Stephen was dead before George, of course he wasn’t in the pension file. Stephen is documented by Heinegg and more.

9/14/2021 at 1:54 AM

Laurie Constantino As of August 2021 Stephen is the correction file, so this is truly breaking news.

That’s why I tagged Faustine, she worked with DAR, may be able to find out more for us.

Private User - I wanted to wait for you & Faustine bit I couldn’t stand the idea of keeping Laurie disconnected from her tree (which she needs to get on Geni). Here’s her https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/66120052/person/34... which is well documented including DAR until just weeks ago.

Stephen Perkins was a Floyd County KY pioneer.

I just attached a six page excerpt from a July 1947 article in the Iowa Journal of History and Politics about George Perkins, his son Stephen, and their children. It was written by Charles Wesley Cruikshank who was the grandson of Keziah Perkins, who was the daughter of Stephen Perkins and Catherine Summa.

Stephen and Catherine had 11 children: George Washington Perkins; Keziah Perkins 1810-1894 (the grandmother of journal author Charles Cruikshank - she married Alexander Cruikshank 1805-188, John Burgess Perkins; Spencer A. Perkins; William Perkins 1818-1836; Elizabeth Betsy Perkins 1821-1907 who married first John Fugate 1816-1851 and second Coleman Reed Ammerman 1813-1898; Stephen Perkins; Talitha Perkins 1826-1894 who married Alfred Soward 1811-1890; Louisa Ann Perkins 1828-1860 who married Hiram Burch 1833-; Moses Perkins abt 1830-?; Eli Perkins abt 1833-15 Jun 1851.

All 11 children are listed by name in the journal article from which I posted excerpts to Stephen's Geni profile. Unfortunately, I'm traveling in Europe and won't have access to the remaining pages of the journal article until the beginning of November.

My family tree is on Ancestry and most of the family is documented there, although I have further documentation at home that I'll be able to access in November if you need it. Here is the link to Stephen in my tree: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/66120052/person/34...

Thank you Erica for reconnecting Stephen to George!

Thank you also for the link to North from the Mountains. I do have this book and it is correct that the Stephen we're discussing was an early resident of Floyd County. My comments on the Perkins information in North From the Mountains

1. Esther Perkins is described as a "free mulatto" in a 1754 Chancery Court document, so we know she wasn't white. Accomack County Virginia Chancery Court record, Index Number 1754-001: https://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/case_detail.asp?CFN=001-1754-001

2. Joshua married Mary Polly Black in 1793, not 1753. https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:J.F._Perkins_vs._J.R...

3. George was in Floyd County KY before he went to Lawrence County (see 5 below). This book is the only place I've seen that suggests Keziah Manning was a "mulatto." All other evidence is that she was white. See e.g. https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:J.F._Perkins_vs._J.R... and https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:J.F._Perkins_vs._J.R...

4. Stephen Perkins is the Stephen Perkins listed in Floyd County.

5. George Perkins listed in the 1820 Floyd County census is Stephen's father, not his child or nephew. Both the male and female in this couple were categorized as 45 or older. https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/1175948:7734?ssrc...

6. Lewis Perkins is the brother of George and son of Old Jock. He is the same Lewis Perkins as was listed in the 1820 Floyd County census. He is mentioned in his brother George's Revolutionary War pension application: http://revwarapps.org/r8113.pdf

I have done Y-700 DNA testing on descendants of all 5 of Joshua Old Jock Perkins sons (George, Isaac, Jacob, Joshua, and Lewis). They all share haplogroup E-FT375579 or its subclade E-FT376097.

This post answered a couple of the questions I had had, eg Keziah Manning’s ethnicity, and if alll of Esther Perkins l sons descent lines had been tested.

From skimming the “North from the Mountains” book, it appears that so far, this particular tri racial isolate group does not seem to have gone to Louisiana?

Hello Erica Howton & Laurie Constantino Erica, thanks for tagging me for this discussion. I have read the pension application and looked at the DAR page. "EL" stands for "Error in Lineage". The note on the DAR profile page says "NO EVIDENCE STEPHEN IS SON OF GEORGE PERKINS".

Laurie, your application was recently approved and if you look at the profile page for George and look at your DAR # it has the EL also. The 2 before it do not have an "EL" with Stephen as the son. I have considered calling or emailing the genealogy dept to ask for clarification about this question. Basically it makes no sense, Either all of the Stephens, son of George should have the EL or at least not every other one. Laurie, since your # has the EL beside it, it would be very appropriate for you to inquire about the inconsistency. The email address is RGCorrections@dar.org. We would love to find out what they say. As it stands your recently approved application is shown as being no longer acceptable, or to say it is showing to have an error in the lineage. At the very least, the validity of you application is now in question. Your Registrar may be happy to help you write the email (if you like).

9/14/2021 at 9:47 PM

I’ve contacted my state registrar as suggested. This doesn’t make any sense. Did you review, for example, the journal article excerpts I posted as documents under the media tab? There is ample documentation that George had a son named Stephen.

I am using Charles Gilbert as my Dar ancestor to start since most of it has been proven on three lines. Then I will start with Richard Henry Lee since no one has used him before :)

@Erica Howton, re racial isolate groups, for many, that is an emotionally fraught question. Here's how I would answer it - Old Jock's sons Joshua and Isaac went to Louisiana and are clearly part of a racial isolate group called Redbones. Old Jock's son Lewis went to Kentucky and is clearly part of a racial isolate group called Melungeon. Old Jock's son Jacob, who stayed in Tennessee, is considered by some to be a Melungeon, although there is not the significant degree of endogamy in his line that most racial isolate groups have. Old Jock's son George and all of his descendants married "white" women, all with radically different backgrounds. This occurred because George's family moved to a new location in every generation, including mine. George and his descendants passed into being "white" by 1830 and, without any marriages within a defined group of people, aren't members of a "racial isolate" group.

9/15/2021 at 11:12 AM

Laurie Constantino thanks for your note. I hope you are successful. Thanks for your efforts!

9/15/2021 at 11:39 AM

So there’s a common ancestor (Esther Perkins), her descendants geographically dispersed, and if they were mobile (George), cannot be defined as “isolate”, or endogamous. Very interesting, thank you.

9/15/2021 at 11:46 PM

[[36 just my take on it. I will say, as a general principle, I avoid this kind of labeling as it inevitably leads to fights. I tend to focus on facts about each family rather than labeling them. Here’s a longer discussion of the topic that night interest you: https://www.encyclopedia.com/social-sciences/encyclopedias-almanacs...

Nice article, thank you.

I have Tennessee & Kentucky ancestry, and have spent some time chasing down supposed Native American. It’s all been illusory.

9/16/2021 at 1:08 AM

Erica Howton At this point, I’ve see autosomal DNA for literally hundreds of Old Jock Perkins descendants. None show any indigenous American ancestry.

Erica Howton and Laurie Constantino, Laurie as you already know, despite me being told by several Kentucky and Ohio relatives and family lore, that grand fathers and grand mothers were part Native American, my DNA also shows NO Native American ancestry (50% Asian 50% European, which was no surprise to me).

And too, NO African DNA either, as in other Perkins / or related families DNA. In my opinion, this is due to my Perkins line moving from Kentucky to Ohio and had not intermarried among related cousins. No Ohio relatives had Native American ancestors either.
Of course I could be wrong on this point.

9/16/2021 at 9:30 AM

It’s 5-6 generations for you. So could be “roll of the genetic dice.”
