The whole family tree for John Hays's wife Levicy (Sutton) Hays is incorrect. Yes, her father was named John Sutton and her mother was named Sarah but there is no proof of who John's parents were or even what Sarah's maiden name was.

Disconnecting Sarah Sutton as child of Joseph Walker & Sarah (Johnson) Walker-Bumgartner

If there is evidence otherwise, please advise.

In case anyone is wondering where I'm extracting this info, here is a link to the family tree for James Sutton and Catherine Dove:

https://wc.rootsweb.com/trees/117132/I15807/jamesd-sutton/individual

Please see where it describes James's son Elijah as a "white Scottish trader" who married a Cherokee woman named Elizabeth Ward. He went to Oklahoma. Elijah's son John W Jack Sutton also ended up in Oklahoma. Jack's sons enrolled in the Eastern Cherokee. John Seaborn Sutton and Alexander Sutton were born in the 1860's and their apps can be found on Fold3. Definitely not born in the 1700s.

"Elijah was a white Scottish trader with his father James in the Cherokee Nation East during the late 1700s. These Suttons had settled in Georgia in what is now Habersham County near Clarksville area. He tried to get compensation for the farm that was taken through what is called "Reservation Rights" because of his marriage to Elizabeth Ward a Cherokee Indian. He was unsuccessful."

Alexander's wife Sarah M Price was born in 1865 and she was from Indiana. John Seaborn's wife Minnie F Walker was born in 1866 and she was from Cole County, Illinois. It can be found on their Dawes cards as well as the family tree above.

Cynthia, have you seen the Cherokee apps that are being used for evidence on these profiles? They are for people that ended up in Oklahoma and died there. They were also born in the 1860s and not in the 1700s when John Sutton father of Levicy was born. I can post the actual apps if you would like.

Will do. Jim Hicks is the one that compiled all of the research on James Sutton and Catherine Dove as referenced in the Rootsweb family tree above. His research can be verified by the rolls, Dawes cards, and apps.

Where does Betsy’s death date come from?

Here’s her family in Starr:

Starr, Emmet. History of the Cherokee Indians. Oklahoma Yesterday Publications edition, Tulsa, OK. 1979. p. 382. Digitized edition at Starr Archive.Org

Not quite sure where that death date comes from. My daughter will be sending me the apps for John Seaborn and Alexander Sutton soon.

So I’ll remove it for now. Now that we’ve got her sorted, don’t want her to get mixed up.
