How far back would I count family? Or is it personal preference?

In Geni, Max Family is back to third great grandparents, out to 4th cousins.
When Geni says a close relative, they mean within your Max Family.
You can see and edit (at least, if it is not a Geni user) private profiles in your Max Family and those managed by people in your Max Family.
